I work at a business of about 100 people. I was just recently hired, but I am still in school and have only been at a tech school for 1 year after this semester. I have no idea if there is any danger in snipping a cat5e wire while it is still running. I could presume not, but I could be wrong. I have no help at work, as there is only one other person hired for IT but they are never here. I would unplug the wire at both ends, but I have no idea where this runs to. Again, just wondering if there is any danger in snipping a live(pluged in to router) cat5e wire. Thanks
I forgot to say where I was cutting it. I’m cutting it about 1 foot away from the current plug and then recapping and then trying to plug it back in after re-capping. Thanks.

I’m trying to run 2 cat5e cables into keystone jacks. I did the first one successfully with the diagrams I found on google, but when I go to strip the second cable the wire colors are different. The first one had the typical orange,blue, green, brown and a striped of each color, but the second has 8 different colors, no stripes. It has blue, light blue, green, light green, brown, tan, orange and white. I searched for answers for hours on how to wire with these colors, but found nothing. So I went and bought another cable and this cable is the exact same. Is there some kind of color conversion chart that I missed or a separate diagram? Thanks for any help.

I have a netgear wireless router from sky broadband and i want to connect my xbox 360. I do not want to connect wirelessly but just want to hard wire it. What cable will i need to do this?

I bought a 50ft cat5e wire off eBay for $10 and when I cut into it, none of the wires are twisted. Is this ok? is there such thing as a cheap cat5e cable? I will be using the internet for Xbox live and internet, I don’t play computer games.
besides the price, the wire I got eBay is not twisted at all, does this effect the connection speed? I have other cat5e wire the it’s twisted two wires together I got at best buy and staples

I’m trying to extend my cat5e Ethernet cable because I don’t have enough and it was really tough running it through the house.

But I have a rj45 jack
So I could use another nethernet cable to connect it to the existing one

But the cables don’t match up and I need to know how the colors cross

The rj45 has these colors
Green
Yellow
Brown
White
Blue
Orange
Black
Red

The cat5e Ethernet cable has
Green
Brown
White/green
White/orange
White/blue
Orange
Blue

I’ve done this before and it has worked but I lost my notes and I can’t figure the color matches now, cuss I know some are crossed

I have cat5e cabling and use blue/blue/whitestrip for line 1 and use green / green/white stripe for line 2.

For each line, is one wire for transmitting and one is for receiving?

I bought 1000′ feet of Cat5e. There is absolutely no color markings on the white wires which is making it a pain to crimp. Is this normal?

I am tired of my media center and xbox extender connecting (or not!) wirelessly and I am looking to run a network cable directly between them. The Xbox is in the room directly above the media center and I want to go through the interior wall. I am not familiar with dropping cable and before I rip open the walls or anything I wanted to know if its likely the wall is hollow all the way down or will there be a beam going through wall on. If there is a beam do I just cut the drywall open and drill a hole through the beam into the wall space below? Then I can cut a hole in the drywall at the bottom and pull the cable through ? I am a little confused and don’t really want to rip my house apart for no reason. The xbox 360 is in a closet in the bedroom above the stairwell and the media center is in the closet beneath the stairs if that helps.

My DSL and phone line use 2 pairs 4 wires, 2 wires for phone 2 wires for internet, that leaves 2 pairs left. What r these pairs used for? Does your ethernet cable out of your router use all 4 pairs (8wires).
