I have a desktop PC with windows vista and I have an xp laptop that has a wireless broadband card, and I wanted to know how to connect my desktop to the internet through my laptop. I have an ethernet cable to connect them, but I could never establish an internet connection. Please explain to me what to do to get connected.

I just installed Win98 on my old computer, I want to connect it to the Internet from my base computer running Vista. I had Linux installed before, where I’d just plug the Ethernet cable from one computer to the other, and I was running Internet on both. Since putting 98 I can’t get it too work, I’m sure it’s a setting in 98. Could someone help me out?
I’m trying to get Internet access on both Vista and 98 computers.
Nowhere really, I’ve tried to set-up a LAN connection,nothing; I think my Ethernet cable may not be recognized by 98. (It was on Linux)

i want to network an xp machine and a vista machine. i have them both connected to a CAT5e cable. i named the workgroup the same on both pcs. what else do i need to do to get this network working?

I have a westall 327 wireless dsl/router modem. My Vista PC is connected by cat5 to router, XP pc is connected via wireless. This is not as easy controlling my home network as XP was. I like Vista, so NO VISTA HATERS please.

ethernet adapter : gigabit
prob : the driver is installed but the shows a msg “unauthorized network” and shows a cross mark at the connection icon at he traybar. presently i use usb cable to connect but my isp told it’s not safe. yeap i forgot>> sometimes it appears as LIMITED CONNECTIVITY too. but i have no problem on XP.

The vista machine is connected to the internet and the machines are connected with a cat5e (ethernet) cable.

The machines can see each other, transfer/copy files etc without a problem. However the XP machine cannot connect to the internet.
They are directly connected as I do not have a router

Well i have connected the Cat5 cable into the Ethernet ports on both the laptop and desktop pc’s, it show that there connected but it says on the vista laptop identified network how do i get full access of each computer without a router and can you make it a step by step responce

I got Vista a month ago, and I have the broadband connection working fine. But every hour or so, it pops and saying “Connect broadband connection” and when it does that it always stalls my internet connection. Does anybody know how to turn this off?

Wht i have got is an ADSL connection with USB ADSL modem with no ethernet port , a LAN card installed as well on my desktop Machine and a crosswire ethernet cable, i have tried the method of assingnig IP’s ( 192.168.0.1 n 192.168.0.2 method ) but sometime my laptop get connected to interenet and some time it dont no matter how many times i try to diagnose it :S !!! File shareing is working normal but internet shareing do not works always, HOW CAN I FIX IT !!!!

I have looked everywhere, and the only directions I’m getting pertain to networks that only deal with IPv4 and not both IPv4 and IPv6 (which is in Vistas network properties). I may not have the limited connectivity problems that I have been having if I was connecting two XP computers (one of the many reasons why I HATE Vista!). I am an amateur at this, and the only reason why I am trying to connect the two computers is to easily exchange files and share drives between them. Any advice will help!

Using Vista Ultimate & XP Pro.
Vista is on a HP Pavillion Media Center PC with a wireless network.

However the XP PC does not have a wireless lan connection. (I do not wish to buy one).

I have tried connecting the Broadband moden via a USB port so that I still have an internet connection and the network wire(blue cable) to the ethernet port.

But I do not see the other PC.

Is there a way to network both PC’s using nothing but the network wire so that I can share files & have internet access on both PC’s?
I’m a newbee to this networking thing.
So what do I do to set up a STATIC IP addresses for both computers and enable ICS on the USB connection on the XP for internet?

The XP is only connected via the network cable.

The Vista is connected via the Broadband modem via a USB cable.

I do not want to go to the expense of buying more equipment.

I have a cat5 cable with a crossover adapter connected to a laptop with vista to a computer with XP i want to connect both of them to a workgroup so i can share the internet and printers from my PC to the laptop.
This is driving me to distraction could someone link me to a guide or explain step by step please?

I have two Vista PC’s on a wired network. When I transfer files between the two I only get around 10MB/sec for speed. Remote differential compression is disabled on both. Same result when using a CAT5e patch cable to directly connect them. Is this normal or should it be faster?
There is no anti-virus software installed on either machine.

Anyone have this problem where your wireless is being used even when you plug into the router? I would like to figure out how to set up my laptop to automatically use the Ethernet when plugged into the router and to switch back to wireless when unplugged from the router.

There isn’t a switch on the laptop to turn the wireless on/off or I would do that.

Me and 3 of my friends want to play Age of empires II: conquerors in multiplayer mode. We have four Vista machines and an 8-ports ethernet switch. We also have enough RJ45 cables to connect between PCs and Switch.
We would like to know how to set up a LAN connection among us in order to play the game.

I have cricket broadbrand on admin account, but on guest account when I double click the start up icon it says it needs software from a disc to complete the installation. I don’t get it. I just plugged in the modem and the software was built in. I clicked that everyone gets connection. I called cricket and it says it’s a vista issue. So how do I fix this? How do I get it to where guests can access the interenet too using my broadband modem?

My school uses LEAP authentication for their network and my Vista computer is not connecting. Any suggestions?
