Connect linux ubuntu 8.04 desktop to xp sp3 laptop via crossover cable.?
I want to know if it’s possible to do this via FREE software (no trial versions).
If so, please tell.
I know I can transfer via usb 2 flash drive but that’s not a very fast way to do things.
Is samba designed to do this?
Please give EXTREMELY DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS because I’m very new to networking.
I don’t have a router and don’t want to buy one even if it’s very cheap.
I have a crossover cable (CAT5e).
I would like to be able to transfer documents in the future.
I know that there is software designed to decode documents between two different OS, but they can’t help me if I don’t know how to use them.
PLEASE HELP!

How should I make an Internet broadband connection on Ubuntu?
I just installed Ubuntu, because I was sick of Windows and its errors. But now I can’t connect to the Internet!!! It only seems to have Wireless and Modem connections and you can’t make another one at all!!
So how do people use Broadband and ADSL connections with Linux Ubuntu???
Please, tell me how to do it and if you could post a Website that teaches me how to do it, too, then that will be awesome.
Thanks

What exactly does Ubuntu Desktop install?
I am installing Ubuntu in order to implement a PBX server. I went with Server the first time and ran into difficulties with VNC. I redid the install barebones and then manually just installed Gnome and am happy so far, but I want to know what exactly is installed with both the Desktop versus the Server edition. My install ISO was for server, do you get different program options with the Desktop ISO?

How to connect to wireless network using Ubuntu terminal?
Yesterday I accomplished this task with 3 commands
sudo iwlist scan
sudo iwconfig eth1 essid “linksys”
sudo dhclient eth1
Today the dhclient command returns something to the effect of “No DHCP Offers found.” I can still see the network with iwlist, and iwconfig still works. So why won’t dhclient do it’s job?
VIDEO: Change Ubuntu 10.10 network card’s DNS Server to Google DNS address
Learn to change Ubuntu’s Network card’s DNS address to Google DNS server address with the Network Connections in Systems’ Preferences sub-menu in Ubuntu top toolbar. Google DNS can be a faster, safer, and more reliable free DNS service provider then your default ISP’s DNS server. 1. Go to the preferences menu found in the System menu on the top toolbar. 2. Click on Network Connections. 3. Highlight eth0 in the wired tab, and click the edit button. 4. Click on the IPv4 Settings. 5. In the Methods Drop down menu, pick Automatic (DHCP) address only. 6. In the DNS server text box, type 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, and click the apply button. 7. Enter in your administrative password, and click the enter key on your keyboard. Post a comment on this video on my blog: johnsonyip.com Now you are using Google DNS in Ubuntu. For More Free Computer Help: johnsonyip.com http pctutorial.info http

Getting online in Linux Ubuntu?
I recently switched to the ubuntu distribution of linux and now I can’t get online. I have a DSL modem with a linksys wireless router. Before, I had windows and it would just ‘pick up’ the wireless signal. Then I would connect to my ISP with a username/password via PPPoE. Now I am in linux, and it wants more information than I have. I don’t know about DHCP or static IPs, subnets or gateways. If there is a way to get this information, or a way to connect the old way with PPPoE, I would like to know it. Detailed answers, please.
