Should my two Vista machines be able to transfer file faster than 10MB/sec over a wired network?

I have two Vista PC’s on a wired network. When I transfer files between the two I only get around 10MB/sec for speed. Remote differential compression is disabled on both. Same result when using a CAT5e patch cable to directly connect them. Is this normal or should it be faster?
There is no anti-virus software installed on either machine.

How do I transfer data from one computer to another with a usb to usb cable?

I just got a new laptop which is running windows vista and I am trying to transfer all of my music and pictures from my old desktop which has XP. I want to transfer files from one computer to another via an ethernet router. How can I do this?

Connecting both computers to an ethernet DSL router gives me a local area network (LAN). I want to transfer files from the old Windows 98 SE computer to the new Windows XP computer. Does anyone know of a freeware program that will do this in a straightforward manner? Are there any special considerations?
More answers please – the first one needs more details, and the second one seems far too complicated.

How do you calculate the total data transfer rate?

Complete the following calculations: Calculate bandwidth requirements for a live event that is streamed over the Internet based on the information below. You are the network administrator for an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your company has been asked to provide bandwidth for a live event produced by one of your clients. You have been asked to calculate the total data transfer required for the event. You have also been asked to verify that your Internet connection can support the maximum estimated concurrent listeners. You have a 45-megabits-per-second (Mbps) connection to the Internet (a T3 circuit).
Event details
• Time of the event: 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M.
• Encoding rate: 22 kilobits per second (Kbps)
• Average length of play: 60 minutes
• Total listeners: 1,500
• Concurrent listeners: 1,200
Calculation 1: Calculate the total data transfer for the live event.

Calculation 2: Calculate the required internet connection bandwidth

***I already have the answer for the 2nd calculation but I’m stuck on the 1st one.
***If anyone knows a formula I can use I’d really appreciate it

Thanks

What USB/Ethernet cable do I need to transfer files between computers?

I do not have a firewire port so my options are either a USB to USB cable or an ethernet cable. I am unsure which ethernet cable i would need or which would be best. I am using Vista and need an easy way to transfer files to another PC without using a wireless network or a USB memory stick ect. Please advise.
