How do you configure a dlink router into a switch?

Since i can’t use 2 router, I’m planning to convert my D-link into a Switch so that i can maximize the speed. How do i do this? (Currently manually configure the WAN to assign the IP address and DNS gateway for the D-link router)
Im currently using d-link 524, so there’s no simple option to just click and magic happen.
and i would still need enough ports for 4 computers.

Can you use a standard networking switch for house phone use?

My entire house has cat5e cabling hard wired to every room, but half the rooms are set up with the cabling as phone lines. All the lines set up for phone are spliced together using little white/red clips. Basically what I want to do is take out all of those clips and put RJ-45 jacks on all the cable ends. Then I want to get two networking switches and plug the main phone line into the first one and plug the internet line into the second one. Essentially I want to be able to take any line and either plug it into the internet switch if I want that particular room to have internet or into the phone switch if I want that room to have a phone. I would have to put RJ-45′s on all the lines so that I could have them carry the internet signal. I know that I can get the networking side of this idea to work I’m just not familiar with phone signals and am not sure if this would work. If I absolutely had to then I could decide which rooms I permanently want phone lines in and which I want internet in and just use the red/white clips for those rooms I want phone in but I would much prefer a highly adjustable system like this.

I’ve tried to be as clear as possible but I’m aware that its a somewhat strange concept and I haven’t been able to find anything on the internet about it. Just to clarify a little but though here are the main things I need to know. Any other advice or information would be a great help. Also if you would like any further clarification feel free to ask me questions.

1.) Can you use a standard networking switch to carry phone line data instead of internet data
2.) Can I wire my main phone in line with an RJ-45 plug (ignoring plug slots that there aren’t wires for) or should I just put an RJ-11 on it and plug that into the switch.

can you just connect a router to a switch with a patch cat-5 or do you have to use a crossover cable?

in the past, to cascade switches you had to connect from the “cascade” port and have a button pushed, but now I need to connect my 4 port router to a switch to add more ports, do I use a patch cat5 or a crossover cat5?

Router/ Switch VS Punch panel?

I am being told by the manufacturer that it is advantagouse to instead of putting a RJ45 jack on one end of the cat5e and plug it into the switch/router at my centeral station to feed the jacks at the wall, to instead

Use a cat5e punch board, punch the end of these wires into that, and run factory made patch cords to send the feed from the switch/router to the patch panel.

Is that really the case.
Thanks Dan_Ocon.
I have learned form your comment. But, if my modem, router, and switch are in my centeral location box, with home runs from every jack to this location the RJ45 plug at this end of the wire is in the box and all the wires are protect.

Therefore even less chance of plug getting damaged than the plug at the jack on the wall.

So should I go my way, or are there other advantages to the punch board.

What network switch shall I use for 6-8 ports gigabit ethernet and draft n wireless?

I want to upgrade my network. I need a netwok switch what gives me 6-8 gigabit ethernet sockets and capable to work as a wireless access point with draft n standards. No internal modem is required for broadband as I already have an adsl2+ modem/router.
Please advice a specific model(s) having teh specs above.
Thanks

can i connect accesspoint to the wired switch that is directly connected to a adsl modem (wi fi)”?

2 ADSL access in ONE switch, DOUBLE THE SPEED?

I’m not very knowledgeable about this stuff, but I have 2 phone lines, each with ADSL internet access, if I connect them to one switch, will my LAN have the speed of the sum of both? Thanks.

How do I switch Broadband supplier and keep uninterrupted connection?

Want to switch UK Broadband Supplier – understand I need to give my new supplier a MAC code in order to switch.

Is there a way to avoid like a day (maybe more) without access? I know what these companies are like and I need my Internet! Can I overlap (I would be prepared to pay two suppliers for one month). Not sure how it works – can I only be connected to one supplier at a time?

Why does a 24 port switch stop blinking [freezes] when a certain PC is restarted or put into sleep mode?

So the network goes down whenever a certain PC on the network is put to sleep or restarted. It may be happening with other PCs as well, but so far has been isolated to this one. This PC has been running for over a year and a half on this switch, a 24 port 10/100/1000 TrendNet switch, without a hitch up until a couple of weeks ago. This problem appeared out of the blue.

All Cat6 runs are tested and fully functional.

What happens, is any active connections suddenly “freeze” on the switch, and their corresponding LEDs become stuck in the on position, no more blinking. And all connections in the home are dropped.

I have it down to either a bad NIC (unlikely), or more likely a bad switch. I’m curious if a WOL setting could be causing this disturbance. Has anyone seen this before?

Should I use another Router or a Switch?

Hello,
I am in the process of moving some of my work computers to another building, and I am in need of some networking advice (all wired btw, not wireless).

Here is a picture I made to help paint a clearer picture.

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/5588/mysetuphf8.png

Here is my setup so far and what I have to work with:
In the main house I have the cable modem and a single router (standard 4 port Linksys). From the house to the shop I have a single 150ft Cat6 cable (straight, not crossover). As this cable has already been run I need to be able to make it work from it. I need to hook up 4 computers in the shop, and I’m not quite sure the way to go here.

From what I’ve read I think I can use a router or a switch in the shop (if switch it will need an uplink port because of the cable not being crossover). I’m wondering which is the best way to go for performance, as each of the four computers will be moving a lot of data (within the network, and also on the internet).

Any help is much appreciated. Thank You.

When using an ethernet switch can I use both connections at once?

I just got a new xbox box and I’m looking to connect it to xbox live. My modem has only one ethernet port which my computer is using. If I get an ethernet switch would I be able to use the internet on my computer at the same time I’m using xbox live?

What’s best a router or a switch?

I have a wireless router/modem with only 1 ethernet connection for my DSL. I just wired my home with CAT5e and want to hook it all together. Would it be better to connect all the CAT5 into a switch and then to the modem or to another router?

Will a wireless range extender act as a wireless switch?

I installed cate 5e cables and jacks just in my basement. Because I installed my coaxial Internet cable in the basement on the north side of the house and my bedroom (which connects wirelessly) is on the third story on the south side of the house, I had to connect a second router to my cat5e jack, which is more in the middle of the basement, to get signal strength. The problem is, the computers down in the den, in the same room where the coaxial cable jack for the Internet is, can not communicate with the computers hooked up to the wireless router. This includes computers that are actually connected wirelessly or hard wired to the computer. I have gotten this to work by entering a static route, but now I’m just thinking about getting a wireless switch. Are the range extenders just basically switches? If so, that would fix the problem because my network would be one broadcast domain.
Computers on the 192.168.1.0/24 network can not communicate with computers on the 192.168.2.0/24 network. But I can configure the 192.168.1.1 router from the 192.168.2.0 network and get on the Internet. Traffic will just not flow the other direction. That’s why I’m thinking about getting a wireless device that is a switch.
