I just installed ubuntu on an old computer of mine, and now I’d like to set it up as a LAN web server. I’m going to install LAMP, which I think I can manage, but after that I’m a bit lost.

Beyond installing apache, what things will I need to do to allow incoming connections?

I have several CAT5 ethernet cables and a router… can I somehow connect these together so that my other computers can connect to the server?

Would I hook the server into the “Internet” slot of the router?

Alternatively, could I simply connect one computer to the server with a CAT5 cable?

I have a Linksys WRT-300N router and i will very soon be installing a CAT6 full house Ethernet system, full gigabit, the router works fast enough for all wireless devices in the house, so i don’t want to replace it. but the “Mud” panel or switch panel i’m buying is gigabit, however the router is only 10/100, and will be used as the DHCP server, will this limit my entire system to 10/100? or will it still do 10/100/1000 for gigabit devices connected into the unmanaged switch panel?

I am having a problem with one of my laptops at work. I have the laptop directly connected via CAT6 cable. Out of 33 laptops I am having one that is giving me this error: “The current time on this computer and the current time on the network are different”

I can connect if I use the laptops system admin login, but when I try to login using my network login it gives me that error. Has anyone else had this problem, and maybe know a fix?
The warning won’t allow me to login to Windows XP. On the DC running Windows Server 2003 R2 how can I force the laptop to update the time?
I found a simple solution to the problem. I took the laptop off the domain and added it to a work group. Then I just re-added it to the domain and it worked. Thanks for all the advice.

Should the modem-router (Netgear DG834GT) not be set to DHCP, but instead the machine that is running the ftp server ?

I currently have an old eMac thats connected via ethernet to a cable modem. It does not have anytype of wireless option, and i do not want to upgrade since this is an old computer and not worth the cost

My company upgraded to Microsoft Office 2003 and integrated a document app into it. Since then, I’ve been unable to connect remotely through my company’s firewall via a Belkin router over a cable connection. The program is now too “server intensive” and the exchange of information packets (I’m told) is overwhelming the system and freezing me out of my internet connection. Two sources have suggested that I “slow down” the router speed to allow a smoother exchange, which will allow me access at home.
