I have a full gigabit network here. My PC has a gigabit card in it (Thinkpad T43 builtin gig card), my switch is a new gigabit switch and my main file storage drive is a WD World Edition gigabit ethernet attached hard drive. My system shows it’s connected at 1.0Gbps, the switch shows that all network devices (except my 100MB printer) are connected at gig speed, yet when I transfer files from or to my WD worldbook drive on the network, again, also connected at gig speed, my network utilization NEVER goes past 2% in windows task manager. It’s just as slow as the 100MB network I just upgraded from.

My understanding of cabling is that CAT6 is best for gig, but CAT5e works at gig speeds too…All cables are pretty much new Belkin CAT5e cables…

What am I missing? This is driving me nutts! OS is Windows XP Pro.

Thanks!
I’m not sure how to “reply” to your response, but it takes about an hour to move 4 gigs of data.

My wifes machine also has a gig connection (Dell D600), I tried moving the same 4GB’s of data to her machine, it was even slower than going to the WD drive…

…?
oh and only 1%…with some things it will spike to 2% at best…Video seems to go faster, more around 5%…Thing is, I thought “gig” was oh I don’t know…”gig”…? Whats the point of going to gig if you have to have some monster crazy stupid fast machine to actually utilize it…?

I have been working for a finance company for six months. My role is completely telephony based , but we were all told that after a while we would be trained in other areas of the buisness i.e. complaints or administrative roles where it wasn’t so telephony based. I was content, knowing that we would be trained up in this area but I was shocked to discover that the majority of my initial training team had been trained in administrative roles and I had not.

I can’t pretend to be very happy about this. I am very confused. Is my work lacking in some way? My Manager always insinuates i’m doing fine. My quality and availability is excellent according to her, so why should I be sidelined when it comes to other training opportunities? I have made it very clear from the outset that I wish to train in other areas and I have put my name down time and time again, but to no avail.

Am I over-reacting? If not, what do you think I should do? I am out of ideas.

If you’re not a techie – PLEASE don’t bother – - – this ones’ a dousy (please don’t tell me to go see a screwup nosebleed at bestbuy or the likes!)

- Maxtor HD FULL LLF (maxtor disk checked for virii)
- Fresh Win2k disk (cracked it outta the cellophane)
- SP4 installed from CD (checked for virii)
- IE6 SP1 installed from CD (checked for virii)
- Internet set up (PPPoE)
- Connect directly to windowsupdate and update to latest
- Sysworks installed (factory disk) and latest virius updates done online
- GOT A VIRUS on first check (W32.Spybot.Worm) – - -checked and removed… HOW??? I don’t know.
- Connect computer to domain.
- When at logon screen, admin shares (IPC$, ADMIN$, C$, D$) work fine. As soon as I logon to ANY profile (roaming profiles on NT4 server), after about 20 seconds ALL the admin shares disappear.

I have a feeling it’s a residual of the spybot worm but how did it get there in the first place?

You’ll have my eternal gratitude if you figure it out! Thanks!
I think I asked for non-techs to abstain … that first answer showed ignorance if nothing else! Sysworks is SYMANTEC Systemworks as in SYMANTEC NORTON ANTIVIRUS plus extras. Puhleeze!!!!!!
I even tried stopping and starting the SERVER service in the services.msc console – it lasts less than a minute before all the shares disappear again!

I had a job interview today. They gave me an assessment test when I arrived. It wasn’t timed, but it took me like 50 minutes to finish. But I had forgotten a few things like the formula for resonance frequency and a question about a digital multiplexer that I didn’t know. Maybe I still did fairly well, but let’s just say that at least I may have gotton half of the questions right , if not more.

Then they started asking me more technical questions, in which they would ask me questions , and I would say the right answer, but when they asked me why, I had a hard time explaining how things worked, and I would sometimes take back my answer, and change it even though it was right the first time. There were a few technical questions they asked me.

Then they gave me a schematic of a DC to DC converter and told me to look at it and tell them about the schematic.

I looked at it and told them that it was a DC to DC converter and told them that it converted the 15V to a positive and negative 13 V, but I had a hard time explaining to them about things in the circuit that made it work. I was able to explain some of it. but not much, and I was a little tense/nervous. It was for a test engineer position

Should I kiss it goodbye? Did I do that bad of a job?

I thought I’d solved the problem but it turned out I hadn’t. I got a couple of trojan viruses on my computer the other day, even with NOD32 and Malwarebytes’ AntiMalware, Ad-aware, and Spybot Search and Destroy, which I know are all very good. I scanned with Malwarebytes, and it found two trojans. Here’s the log:

Memory Processes Infected: 0

I deleted the two trojans, so everything was working again (I wasn’t being redirected to other sites on the internet anymore). However, this morning, the same problem has come back. I’m assuming that there is a rootkit installed somewhere, but nothing can find it. I’ve also scanned with VundoFix and RogueRemover, which didn’t find anything either. I scanned with SmitFraudFix, and the log after that came up with a HUGE list of random websites, and then this (sorry for the long question):

Run from C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\SmitfraudFix

I’ve tried deleting what SmitFraudFix has found, but it doesn’t seem to work. If I do the scan again on SFF straight afterwards, it finds the same things, but doesn’t delete them.

So, what else is there to do? Haven’t I tried everything? Please don’t recommend programs like AVG, Norton, McAffee and Avast because they are not as good as the ones I am using, and are unlikely to find the rootkit if they better antiviruses can’t.

Thanks!
