in the past, to cascade switches you had to connect from the “cascade” port and have a button pushed, but now I need to connect my 4 port router to a switch to add more ports, do I use a patch cat5 or a crossover cat5?

I am in the process of wiring my home for ethernet, or rather in the planning stages, and am looking over what i need, i bought 1000ft of cat5e cable, some wall plates cat5e keystones, and am trying to find out what else i need i am told i need a Network switch i am thinking of using this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122004, seems pretty good, and well i really want to know if i need a patch panel? what do they do? do i really need one? what purpose do they serve? Am i mising anything else?

I want to connect my Samsung BD-P2550 Blu-ray player to my internet connection to view Netflix movies. I need a 100ft. ethernet cable to connect my internet to my Blu-ray. Do I purchase a crossover or patch cable?
I had called Samsung and the lady told me to use a crossover. She didn’t sound very knowledgeable, that is why I am posting the question to the techies out there.

hi my little sister has a new computer on xp (hand me down)and i want to connect it to mine via a cat5e patch cable for her to get the internet i am on a wireless connection but am very close to router but unfortunatly the wire wont reach to router or id put it directly to that please help if it helps the wire is blue and fits in the ethernet port thanks

ok so there is an ethernet outlet down near my basement where i keep my xbox, but my dad says its not wired yet, and i really want to play xbox live. so what i want to know is there a way i can set up the outlet myself or do we have someone to do that for us. thanks

I have a large file on one of my computers (3.88 GB – I don’t have a flash drive large enough for this nor an external hard drive) and I wanted to transfer it to another of my computers.
Is there a way to connect my computers using an ethernet patch cable, not a crossover cable?

Got a cat5 patch cable, but can’t get the modem or the nic to light up. What’s the usual type of cable for that connection, patch or crossover?

I’m going to be running cat5e cables inside the walls of my house i will probably have a few computers hooked up to the main switch that would be in the “network closet”. When i get all the cables together i know i could hook them all up to the switch and that is really all i need, but i see people use panel patches before the switch. Can someone tell me what that is for and why it would be a good idea to put one? what is the purpose of a panel patch and how does it hook up to the switch?

Our network is currently made up of all cat 5e components. We are adding new office space and I was going to wire the new addition with cat 6 components just because it’s newer. (Not that we really need it) I was wondering if cat6 can be punched into the existing cat 5e patch panel. I want to leave the existing wiring alone for now. Also, can I use the cat 5e RJ-45 connectors that I currently have for the cat 6 cable and can I use the same crimping tool that I currently have that is for cat 5e? The only physical difference that I could see is that the cat6 uses 23 awg wires and the cat5e uses 24 awg wires, which is a difference of about .0025″.

Hi. I will be getting a wireless router which has Gigabit ethernet ports. I want to get a cable to connect the router to my computer which has full gigabit capabilities. I have been looking around and I have found RJ45 CAT6 Patch cables. I read that CAT6 has gigabit capabilities, but what is a CAT6 patch cable? Is it what I want, bearing in mind that I am a gamer, so i need the best speed.

Yes, but the router is wireless, so I can get a better internet speed and connection with other wireless devices on my network.

is it possible to use a patch cable instead of a cat5 crossover cable to connect my laptops wifi to my desktop?

My Motorola Dsl Modem came with a 5 foot CAT5 cable but i need a 100 ft one. I went to fry’s and purchased a 100 ft one. I failed to compare the end connectors and it seems that the one i bought has 8-pins and the one i had only has 4 pins. So im thinking can i strip the ends and switch my 4 pin connector to the 8-pin and just exclude the extra cables. Would that work?

Both our laptops are Vista and when we plug in our cable, it does not see the cable. we want to LAN Age of Empires 3, but we don’t know how. please help us.
