I tried going over coax with a modulator, that did not work. I could go over 3 Coax with RCA tips on them but I would rather not use that. I thought there was a system that could go over CAT5 cable but I have not found it yet.
The longest cable I have found is 12′ I would not like to use that many connectors.
There are wireless solutions as well, but I would like to use somethig more reliable.

Im planning on building a biquad dish along with a wrt54g router mounted outside and powered by Passive PoE.

Im wondering, with passive PoE, if i input 12V, will the device receive the full 12v over lets say 10 metres of RJ45 Cat5e Patch cable? Can i use RJ45 Cat5e patch cable without a problem? If not what type of ethernet network cable would you recommend?

Also, while im here, if the router requires 1AMP, if i install a 80mm fan which requires 0.09AMPs, do i need a power adapter/cable which will povide 1.09amps or will 1amp be fine?

O, about amps, what kind of amps can Passive PoE carry?

My laptop is connected wirelessly to the internet. I want to plug the router into the laptop’s ethernet port so that the connection can be shared with other devices such as a few laptops, ps3, psp, and my printer. Where do I plug the cable into the router? What settings do I need to change?

If you know the answer to this could you also explain how you worked the answer out as I want to learn how to do this

(I dont just want/expect the answer given to me without me having to actually do any work or learn anything!)

hi, I want to run a VOIP line and a high speed internet line over the same Cat5E cable.

My question is how do I combine both ethernet cables, would I use a network switch?

Second question is will I experience any internet slow down as a result

I have connected my PC and laptop through a CAT6 cable. Both devices have a gigabit network card. However, during the file transfer process, I cannot achieve more than 60MB/sec of transfer rate. Can anyone help me to address the problem?

Well, my cable is onlr 3m of length. I knew about the overhead; however, I’ve never thaught that these overheads can reduce speed to THIS level.
Moreover, the 2 computers are connected directly through tha cable, and both LAN connections say that the speed is 1 Gbps.
About the cable; I am not sure. It is just printed CAT6, and is not netioned anything about shielding!!!

I want to run video and audio about 50 feet to my TV.
I already have ethernet cat5 running between the locations with three types of connections at either end,
HDMI, s-video and component video plus the normal 2 channel audio, (I do not need surround sound for this TV).

Can I just put RCA jacks at either end of the ethernet cable pairs (it has 5 pairs) and use the component video (3 pair) and the audio (2 pair)? WIll this work?

Or is there another better way?

I have a cat5 cross-over cable which I have been using for sharing printer and files/folders. And also somehow I once did shared the internet connection on both the computers with this same CAT5 cross-over cable but now when I need it I don’t know how to do it. I think I’m doing what i did last time (few months back).

I’m doing the following:
connected both the computer via Cross over cable.
the internet is on host computer and I was to share it with client computer also. so I specified IP address for Host computer 192.168.0.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
and client computer 192.168.0.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.0.1

and after doing the above configurations I was successfully able to share files and printer.

now to share the internet connection I connected the internet and put it on sharing and now restarted both the computers to take effect. (I also checked the firewall settings) but cannot share the internet but file and printer sharing is fine.

I’d like to “piggyback” an intercom/PA system over an existing cat5 network. I’d like to have a small background program always running on all the nodes that would allow me to speak into a microphone on one computer, and have the audio broadcast to all computers on the network simultaneously, similar to a PA system.

One specific computer would always be the broadcaster, the rest would always be receivers. I’d like the receivers to always be “at the ready” to accept a broadcast. A low-cost or free software solution is preferable.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
Icecast seems like it might be a good solution. I need a way, however, to encode live audio into a stream on the fly. Ideas?

More like how many minimum seconds will it take to transfer a 100 MB video clip over a 200 kbps broadband connection?

Looking at implementing a domain controller with about 22 computers in the domain. All the wiring is Cat5. Would it make sense to install a 24-port gigabit switch of which one port is taken by a wireless-n/gigabit WAP? Right now about half of the 22 systems would have wireless-n cards and the others would have gigabit NICs. Questions: 1.) How does gigabit run over standard cat5? 2.) how would access rates be assuming the 11 wireless were all constantly hitting the WAP running Quickbooks from the server? 3.) Does it make sense to build up a new network around 10/100 switches and cards, or is that going to rapidly be antiquated?
Thanks for the first response. Cost is always an issue and I think with a 30 node network traffic is not bottlenecked by a 100mbps connection. The real question is that this company is young and the network scheme is just being developed. I want to plan for the future and don’t want to insvest in technology that no one will be using in 5-years. One last question for the wireless (since net-admin is not my full time trade)- Seems to me that I would want the WAP inside the firewall so traffic through it is forced through the firewall. Is this thinking correct? This looks better to me than a Sonicwall firewall that includes a WAP built in. Thanks again.

Last time I checked my laptop’s wireless configuration menu (now) I see 54.0 Mbps. Therefore I was wondering if you guys can explain about the other differences than what I see below

I have two Vista PC’s on a wired network. When I transfer files between the two I only get around 10MB/sec for speed. Remote differential compression is disabled on both. Same result when using a CAT5e patch cable to directly connect them. Is this normal or should it be faster?
There is no anti-virus software installed on either machine.

I want to add a coax jack to another room without running the cable. I would assume that since Cat5 can be sent over powerline, then Coax should be a no-brainer. I find it hard to believe that no one makes this handy gadget.
