Can you use a standard networking switch for house phone use?

My entire house has cat5e cabling hard wired to every room, but half the rooms are set up with the cabling as phone lines. All the lines set up for phone are spliced together using little white/red clips. Basically what I want to do is take out all of those clips and put RJ-45 jacks on all the cable ends. Then I want to get two networking switches and plug the main phone line into the first one and plug the internet line into the second one. Essentially I want to be able to take any line and either plug it into the internet switch if I want that particular room to have internet or into the phone switch if I want that room to have a phone. I would have to put RJ-45′s on all the lines so that I could have them carry the internet signal. I know that I can get the networking side of this idea to work I’m just not familiar with phone signals and am not sure if this would work. If I absolutely had to then I could decide which rooms I permanently want phone lines in and which I want internet in and just use the red/white clips for those rooms I want phone in but I would much prefer a highly adjustable system like this.

I’ve tried to be as clear as possible but I’m aware that its a somewhat strange concept and I haven’t been able to find anything on the internet about it. Just to clarify a little but though here are the main things I need to know. Any other advice or information would be a great help. Also if you would like any further clarification feel free to ask me questions.

1.) Can you use a standard networking switch to carry phone line data instead of internet data
2.) Can I wire my main phone in line with an RJ-45 plug (ignoring plug slots that there aren’t wires for) or should I just put an RJ-11 on it and plug that into the switch.

Networking 2 pc’s on XP.?

Dual Core Networking?

Would using a Wireless (Intel 4965AGN) and Wired (CAT5e Ethernet cable) improve speed. As in, would it be faster than just using Wireless or just using Wired. (Wired tops out with a 1.85 MB/s bandwidth and Wireless is like 1.63MB/s) <–Speedtest.net FTW :D

Is there any problem if we put network cables & electrical wires together for office networking?

We are doing networking for new office and electrical work also. The electrical engineer want to put both the Cat5 cable & electrical cables together in one box.Is there any problem if we put them together?

What kind of wireless router/switch setup is best for my home networking needs?

Hello Yahoo Community, it’s my first yahoo question!

Currently, we’re running a home network using a Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable Modem (we have Cox Cable Internet w/ powerboost – *advertised speed* = 15Mbps *actual speed* = 1-2 Mbps, on a good day). We’re running the network through a Netgear 54 Mbps WGR614 v6 wireless router. We have secured the network with a WPA generated passkey.

The problem: the laptops, desktops, iphones, and game systems are not able to connect wirelessly to the router at the same time without at least one getting kicked off the network or the network timing out. We have to do a manual modem reset (you know, unplug the power cord 10 sec, cross fingers, plug back in, etc.) at least once a day if not more often to get the device we want to connect at the time on the network properly.

We want to be able to connect the list of existing devices below but manage connections better so that the network isn’t completely hogged and folks aren’t kicked off the wireless network at home at random. The house is a two story house, but the range of the wifi signal does not seem to be the issue – someone will be surfing the net without any problems on a laptop upstairs in the furthest bedroom away from the router while someone else is trying to connect sitting a foot or two from the router itself downstairs and they can’t get on.

We would also like to create a home network that can not only connect the devices listed below more efficiently, but we want the option in the future to add in a networked printer that the computers can all print to centrally as well as add network-attached storage from two spare USB 2.0 hard drives to do backups on the computers in the house and possibly use as a central media hub/server to stream to the TV in the future.

My best guess for the reason for the problem boils down to three things: 1) The cable modem is a bit old and might be giving out randomly and we may need an upgrade, but I am not sure and/or 2) We need to upgrade our internet service to 25 Mbps and/or 3) The wireless router cannot handle the amount of devices connected to it.

I was thinking about upgrading us to an Airport Extreme Base Station or similar router but need to know if this will be able to handle the connections we need.

We’ve got the following devices connected:
1 Desktop PC running Windows XP connected via ethernet cable
2 Macbook Pros running Leopard and Snow Leopard connected wirelessly
1 iMac running Leopard connected wirelessly
2 iphones connected wirelessly (sometimes – mostly we have to default to 3G due to devices getting kicked off the network randomly and would prefer to use the wireless connection at home)
1 Tivo DVR connected via ethernet cable
1 Ps3 system connected via ethernet cable
1 Nintendo Wii connected wirelessly
1 Xbox 360 system connected wirelessly
1 VOIP Vonage router connected via ethernet cable

Any suggestions for routers or other setup ideas would be great. One restriction is that we can’t run CAT6 or other similar modification solutions as we rent our home. We need a non-destructive solution. I’m willing to run a few more ethernet cables along the floors with cable ties here and there but nothing involving drilling or running wires through a wall.

Any suggestions or advice for our set up would be greatly appreciated! :) Thank you for your time Yahoo Community!
Thanks for the advice TexasNetWolf! I tried the IPCONFIG command to get the ping test going with the router and it seems like the router is definitely the problem. The connection kept timing out as you said, but would work every once in a while.
The next question then would be if I have to get a new router, what kind would be best in terms of ease of set up for the list above – along with some room to grow to add the network attached storage, printer sharing and media server capabilities I mentioned above?

This is about networking: Is it fine to connect about 201M from the Hub(3Com Switch 2226) to other Hub(same)?

a.) 3Com Switch Baseline 2226 Hub used.
b.) Is there a need to add a repeater? If so, what are the products?
c.) Products here LAN repeater in the Philippines?
d.) Cat5e UTP used

Home Networking Questions?

I have a wireless Router connected to a modem that I use to connect to the internet.

After moving to a new home, I have a realized that the wireless network is too far away form my other computers in the house, and I need to run ethernet wires to them.

I am not exactly sure what the optimal setup would be. I am trying to achieve the highest internet speeds possible. My computer has the LAN Chipset Marvell 88E8056 and a Max LAN Speed of 10/100/1000Mbps.

My best guess is to run a Category 5 e Patch cable from my router to the computer. The one I would buy is probably this one : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812601093.

Is this my best option, or is there something better for around the same price? Also, that wire is supposed rated at 550 mhz. What does this mean, and is it correct? I thought only cat6 ethernet wires went that high.

(Would buying a separate NIC be beneficial? I use my computer for gaming)

Comcast is my ISP. How would I determine what my internet connection upload/download speeds are rated?

(I have been told buying my own modem would be beneficial, as the Touchstone Telephony Modem [Arris Model TM602G/CT] limits my local internet Connection to 10 mbps. Is this true, even if my Upload/Download speeds are rated higher? If I bought my own, is it easy to setup, and would I notice a difference in internet speeds?)

Thanks for all the help,
NNJZ

Networking in an Ethernet-equipped home?

I bought a house that is fully ethernet-networked…so basically, each room has Cat5e sockets….when I trace these wires down to the basement, they are all connected to the “output” sections on a 40-port Switch…

So could this possible work:–

Connect my Cable Modem to the input coaxial cable in the basement…take the ethernet out (the line that would normally plug right into a single PC) and place that into the “input” on the SWITCH?

This way, will I be able to get internet in every room? What about multiple computers at the same time? Does the switch work like a Router too? Or will I need to place a separate router somewhere in this setup? What about a wireless access point?

I know these are a lot of questions, but any and all answers are welcome.

Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the input people…

Just a clarification:- a lot of you have suggested putting a router in between modem and switch…so do I just pick any one of the 4 “out” slots on the router and plug that into the “input” on the switch?

ethernet networking cables and a xbox 360?

i bought an belkin cat5e networking cable and want to know if it works on an xbox 360 to hook up to xbox live

Networking with Cat 5e cable?

Can someone give me a little bit more of an understanding in Networking? I am setting up our new internet which is 8.1 mbps and our router which is a netgear wndr3400. if I plug in a cat5e cable to the back of that and connect that to the cable box, wouldnt the internet be slowed down, if the router can do a wireless network of 300 mbps? I would think that the cable would slow the router down… does it?

networking question on downloading speeds, any of u gurus out there?

im not too good at networks so if this is a stupid question … sry :D
ok.. i got a 3meg dsl connection and speed test.net said i get around 2.8-3 megs..
but my download speeds are around 350kb/s…????
ive got a good system, higher end cables like cat6 instead of cat5e..
SOO i MUST be missing some obvious thing? at first i thought well maybe theyre servers slow? but i added another download to the mix and it basicaly devided the 350kbs between the two downloads
(different server downloads)
lol thanks guys :D
i didnt know they had it in bits instead of bytes :D
i read abreviation for megs and thought megabyte lol
i KNEW it had to be some little stupid thing i overlooked :D
thnx ALLOT guys :D

what is best internet cable or networking cable for internal use(Inter-Office Networking)?

I already used UTP cable CAT5e… but sometimes it delivers slow transmission especially long range connected computers even sometimes short range connected computers. Is there any possible network cable in replace with UTP Cat5e in order to have fast transmission of data to another computers (networked)?

Should I do my home networking myself?

We’re about to do an addition on our home and I want to run cat5e to several rooms. The walls will be open and I’ve done some basic crimping and things before but I don’t own the equipment. I’m Just wondering if it’s worth it for me to run out and get the equipment (Crimping Tool, Tester, Connectors, and 1000 feet of cable) and run the wire myself or if I should just get a professional to do it. Does anyone know how much it would cost hire someone to do this??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

networking cables help!!!!!!!?

does a cat6 cable work in a cat5e extender(an extender attaches to ethernet cables to be a big cable, lie this one http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812993024) and does a male connector work in female, i am not sure if this is male or female ethernet cable:http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189093, but i want to connect it to this extender:http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812993024

I am going to buy 2 so i have 200 feet

Who makes the best networking cable?

I am looking for some cat5e solid strand, shielded, bigger then 24awg (it does exist), gold plated connectors, and molded boots.

Cat5 or wireless for networking?

I was under the impression that cable was always faster than wireless. 100Mbit divided by 8 would equal 12.5MB ps the maximum theoretical rate.

And wireless G is 54Mbit or 6.75MB ps as the maximum theoretical rate.

Then I find out Cat5 cable are 100mhz capable… some unregualted ones are 350mhz and up what exactly does that mean if they’re all still only up to 100Mbit in terms fo performance?
lol most peopel i know actually have opposite ends of the spectrum really low on ~1mb or 10mb some 12 and even 16
This is for a LAN setup for games. Only liek one or two of us have 10/100/100 compatible gear so we just figured use Cat5e :p
