Ok, here are all the details i can imagine would be relevant.

I have the Linksys WRT54GS wireless router set up with the CAT5 network cable going to the “internet” port from my DSL modem. I have another length of CAT5 going from the “1″ port to the ethernet port on my desktop computer. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate. I can get into my router configuration and set up my wireless network. When I do this, my laptop sees the network, gets an IP address and connects to the wireless network but I have no internet connectivity for either my desktop or my laptop. I know they are on the same network because I can use the remote desktop feature on my laptop to log in to my desktop (the whole reason i started this project). Unfortunately it isnt doing me any good because I cant connect to the internet. When run the cable directly from the modem to the ethernet port on the desktop (eliminating the router completely) it works just fine, evidenced by the fact i’m able to post this. Help!

Currently I have Buffalo router flashed with DD-WRT, and it is modified so that the range is extended a little bit. However I need a signal on the other side of the house (about 170 ft away and signal must pass through about 5 walls).

I wanted to run a Cat5e cable from the router into the attic and place an access point in the attic, but in the summer the attic temperature is >110 degrees and would porbably fry the router. I cannot run a Cat5e cable into another room and place the router in there, because it is not my house.

I tried Draft-N, I bought card for all the computers, but it still made no difference. I guy at BestBuy said there were probably too many other wireless networks or phones in my subdivision. (which could be the case since there are multiple wireless networks)

Is there anyway to increase the range of my wireless network without running cables throughout the house? Should I be looking for a router with a better range…if so which one?

My neighbor and I also work next door to each other. I give him access to my wifi connection (via his laptop) at work. He got high speed at home and has shared it with me (and my wife). Thing is, his wifi signal only barely arrives to our house, and only if we are sitting on the patio or in the bedroom.
I’ve got a linksys WAP54g (access point) and a Linksys WRT54g (router) and two laptops with wireless cards.
I can plug the AP into my laptop via cat5 and get the wifi signal and internet, no problem. I can configure my router to run a network at home and share files or use a networked hard drive. No problem. The problem seems to be when I plug the AP into the WAN port of the router, I don’t get internet via the router.
I upgraded the firmware on both AP and router. Still no dice. Feeling like I’m very close but must be missing something.

okay, I’m at work and there are prob 10 computers connected through the network. I’m wanting to move a comp into an unused room to set up an office. I’ve plugged my comp up & went to the back to plug a Cat5e cable to some box, and I get internet connection, but it won’t connect to the program I need to access. It says NO CONNECTION. I am obviously missing something.
Okay, so I think I may have figured out how to do it, but now I notice the keyboard won’t work! I even took this one in there and it wouldn’t work on it. The lights lit up on the keyboard, but it won’t take anything I key in
I actually get an internet connection, that’s how I was able to tell the keyboard won’t work. I went to a few sites I had already been on in this room. It is only another room. Same building. I just checked, and it does say I’m connected to the local area network, so I guess my problem is with the actual program….
so forget the original question now! SORRY
now I need help with the keyboard!LOL

Allow me to be clear here. I WANT THE DATA TRANSFER THROUGH THE WIRED PORTION OF THE NETWORK TO BE FASTER. I mention the wireless aspect only so you know, in case it matters (I don’t think it does.)

I am moving to a new house and I am planning to network all rooms. My plan at this point is to run Cat5e cables from every room to the garage, where I want to combine them in a patch rack. In the same vicinity, I want to place a router/switch to connect all rooms to a single modem. In addition, I would like to connect a dedicated server out there in the future.

Here are my questions:

- What is the CLEANEST way to accomplish the task. I am trying to avoid the “home-build” look and are planning on going for a (semi-)professional set-up.

- Once the cables come out of the wall, should I first feed them into their separate patch cabinet (in-wall? wall mounted?) or should I feed them straight into a small (wall mounted) server rack.

- What is the cleanest/safest/easiest way o run the cables through the wall/underneath the floor? Are racetracks the best way to go?

- Are there any good web tutorials?

- Where is the best place to purchase the equipment?
