I want to know if it’s possible to do this via FREE software (no trial versions).
If so, please tell.
I know I can transfer via usb 2 flash drive but that’s not a very fast way to do things.
Is samba designed to do this?
Please give EXTREMELY DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS because I’m very new to networking.
I don’t have a router and don’t want to buy one even if it’s very cheap.
I have a crossover cable (CAT5e).
I would like to be able to transfer documents in the future.
I know that there is software designed to decode documents between two different OS, but they can’t help me if I don’t know how to use them.
PLEASE HELP!

Read: In this video, I show you how to setup PAM security to prevent SSH users to login as root, as well as test it. I also show you how to change the SSH port and add it to the iptables rules (OPTIONAL!). Also note, anything I do in this, it may be deemed as non-secure in some ways. Well, I’m perfectly aware of that. I’m just showing how to do specific things. Security is the next step, and can be read up on. Thank you, Shane. (The written version is being revised to reflect /etc/sysctl.conf changes) If you want a truly secure SSH ability, you may want to read this as a reference… fedorasolved.org . I do not cover this. Notes: If you use debian or anything debian based, I cannot and will not help you. Do not ask for help on those distributions. Especially ubuntu. Prerequisits: -You followed the first two videos -DHCP and IPTABLES concepts understood and completed on your server You can follow along completely if you use these distributions: –Fedora –CentOS Commands to note: vi — It’s an editor in linux. i for insert, o for a new line, shift+g to go to the end of the file, ESC for command mode. :wq saves your file (zz does too). nano — Another editor in linux, much easier to use. pico –Alternative to nano if not available. services name restart –name being the name of the service ssh –Secure Shell. Allows a machine to remotely access another with encryption. useradd –Adds a user passwd –Changes the password for a user (if typed without a username, it changes …

Alright I am on Sabayon 3.5 and here is the problem, after configuring a pppoe connection using the command

sudo pppoe-setup

followed the wizard and did everything and started it with

sudo pppoe-start

it says its connected, now there is a problem that its using eth0 as internet interface whereas I want it to use ppp0.

I checked with ifconfig that ppp0 is active but Sabayon just doesn’t want to use it as the interface……what am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your reply Astro, I have even been through the Gentoo documentation.

My router firewall is off, the pppoe-setup allows u to setup a basic desktop firewall which I think is number “1″, the numberings r from 0 to 2 I think.

0 is no firewall
1 is for work stations
2 for servers

I chose 1 and I am pretty sure pppoe is enabled in the gentoo kernel.
do u think its possible that even though ppp0 is setup sabayon’s firewall is covering ppp0 and only allowing access to eth0, if so how should I change that?
No, BSD Unix Geek, rc.conf in Gentoo doesn’t have any such option u mention, but I did try manually modifying pppoe.conf but no it made no difference.
Update, even people at the Sabayon forums don’t know whats wrong…….lol

I configured my ethernet connection using the command “sudo pppoeconf”. Now the problem is that I can’t visit my router webpage which is speedtouch.lan to make changes in the router configuration.

Some one in the forums told me:
“If you have a router, what are you running ppp on the PC. This will tunnel thru the router and you will not use the router as your dns server. You will use the ISP dns which does not know speedytouch.lan.

Configure pppoe on the router and then use the router to share this ppp connection to all your PCs and devices.”

Is he right? Then how can I configure pppoe on my router, I am using Gutsy right now and I remember I never had a problem like this in Fiesty.

I recently switched to the ubuntu distribution of linux and now I can’t get online. I have a DSL modem with a linksys wireless router. Before, I had windows and it would just ‘pick up’ the wireless signal. Then I would connect to my ISP with a username/password via PPPoE. Now I am in linux, and it wants more information than I have. I don’t know about DHCP or static IPs, subnets or gateways. If there is a way to get this information, or a way to connect the old way with PPPoE, I would like to know it. Detailed answers, please.
