I’m just wondering the basics of LAN. All I’ve got is 1 CAT5 cable and two computers… Is there anything else that is essential to me?

in the past, to cascade switches you had to connect from the “cascade” port and have a button pushed, but now I need to connect my 4 port router to a switch to add more ports, do I use a patch cat5 or a crossover cat5?

How can I get broadband internet service on just my laptop? right now I have a 3 computer network and my brothers computer is the one with the modem, he’s moving out soon and that leaves me without internet access on my laptop. I know that you can get broadband cards that slide into a slot on the side of the laptop but where can I get service for a monthly rate and not just at hotspots but inside my house. I need internet access on my laptop so I can do my homework for school……or I could put my brothers modem(since its not his its the cable companies) on my desktop and keep my network right?
No, its not the only computer in my house, I have a desktop, the bill is not in my brothers name, and I know they are called wifi cards and I have a router, I just want to know how I can get internet on my laptop. I think what I will do is just move the modem to my desktop and then I’ll still have access on my laptop like I have now. When he moves out he’ll have to set up his cable tv anyways so might as well set up his internet service too right? besides he can’t take the modem from this residence its not his its the cable companies and he doesn’t pay the bill.

i am having trouble with this. i am just wondering if i really need to buy their lan connector. where i live provides a T1 connection to the internet. i don’t want to go spend a lot of $ if it wont work any way.
i do not use a modem or router. i am wired direct from the plug in my wall to my computer. i would have to install a router to go wireless
Nintendo has discontinued their wifi usb connector. i know that the wii doesn’t have an Ethernet connection. i have an adapter to go from usb to cat5. i connected this but it isn’t reading that there is a internet connection. what does the lan connector do to make it work? or is it my internet connection?

(Vista) It is feed through the computer via an ethernet cable. The other computers are XP and used to get a signal from here not great but ok. They send more pkts than they receive. Its something simple because. DHCP fine /ping 192.161.1.1 ok all IP set to automatic and Window wireless auto config on the XP. Shared activated

So currently I have a wireless router that I use for my laptop and desktop. And I will be getting an Xbox 360 and was wondering do you HAVE to get an ethernet cable that is for the Xbox 360 or will any ethernet cable work? And I’ll need a really long one because my router is like 25 feet away.

I am starting my own business but need leads. I do not have money to pay, so how can I get the information myself? I want to get names of new companies so I can do the telecommunications and cable wires.

I have two computers right next to each other on this desk and I want them both to be able to connect on the internet for games and other reasons but I only have one cord running to the computer I am on right now.
