Can a Siemens Speedstream 4200 Broadband Modem “Windstream” be used as a wireless router for a laptop in my house?

My entire house has cat5e cabling hard wired to every room, but half the rooms are set up with the cabling as phone lines. All the lines set up for phone are spliced together using little white/red clips. Basically what I want to do is take out all of those clips and put RJ-45 jacks on all the cable ends. Then I want to get two networking switches and plug the main phone line into the first one and plug the internet line into the second one. Essentially I want to be able to take any line and either plug it into the internet switch if I want that particular room to have internet or into the phone switch if I want that room to have a phone. I would have to put RJ-45′s on all the lines so that I could have them carry the internet signal. I know that I can get the networking side of this idea to work I’m just not familiar with phone signals and am not sure if this would work. If I absolutely had to then I could decide which rooms I permanently want phone lines in and which I want internet in and just use the red/white clips for those rooms I want phone in but I would much prefer a highly adjustable system like this.

I’ve tried to be as clear as possible but I’m aware that its a somewhat strange concept and I haven’t been able to find anything on the internet about it. Just to clarify a little but though here are the main things I need to know. Any other advice or information would be a great help. Also if you would like any further clarification feel free to ask me questions.

1.) Can you use a standard networking switch to carry phone line data instead of internet data
2.) Can I wire my main phone in line with an RJ-45 plug (ignoring plug slots that there aren’t wires for) or should I just put an RJ-11 on it and plug that into the switch.

Our previous router needed to be reset all the time and eventually it just crapped out. We have 6 people in our house and it is 3 stories. We all have laptops, we play Xbox live, 5 of us have smart phones that connect to the network, and one person uses a Slingbox to watch TV which is also connected to the internet. Specific suggestions would be great. Thanks

I have searched everywhere to help with my problem and kind find a fix so I am in need of help. My house is prewired for 2 ethernet(cat5e) connections in every room. I just don’t know how to get internet connections to run to them. I have a patch panel in my house for all the ethernet and cable lines to run to so Does anyone know how to send an internet connection through my patch panel? I have a cable internet connection with wireless but it has a very poor connection which is why i want to use ethernet. Do I have to buy a router and pat all 16 ethernet hookups into one and run that to my cable modem? By the way my patch panel isn’t anywhere near my main cpu if that makes a difference.Thanks in advance.

I will have 2 laptops and 1 desktop working off this router. However, due to safety concerns, i do not want anybody else from working off of my router signal.

I have decided to wire my house for ethernet, so that I have no trouble streaming 1080p video from a centralized server, which I would like to have in the basement. How would I go about getting the cables to the main floor and second floor, and then, from that point, to the necessary rooms?

I’ve been reading guides online, and some recommend a main floor coat closet with a conduit. This is doable, as behind the baseboard (I’m doing floors so these aren’t installed) there is a small open space to the boiler room in the basement. However, from this point, there are two problems. How do I run the cable to the two or three points I want on the main floor, and how do I go up through the ceiling to the second floor? Right above the coat closet is a hallway.

If I can find a way to get upstairs, maybe I can go all the way to the attic, and distribute upstairs that way. But the main floor is still a mystery to me.

Finally, do builders use any conduit for telephone/coaxial cable wiring? I have outlets for those in most rooms, I wonder if it would be possible to use that to my advantage.

there is already one dsl modem that att gave us would i be able to connect another one in my room to get internet connection for my ps3 and xbox 360

it will be hard to use just a router with cat5e cable connected to the dsl modem because i moved all my gaming stuff into my bedroom so if you can not use to dsl modem at the same time is there anything else i can do do get internet in my room

my house is set up so that multiple rooms can have wired access to the internet .. my room was working and suddenly it stopped .. i looked at the router it was pulled into and the light will not turn on for the cord that is for my room.. i tried another cord and it STILL will not work any suggestions ?

How do you network your house?? I want to put the broadband throughout my house. By using my switch i can put up to 5 cables through the house! I would like to put Ethernet sockets on the walls of the rooms i will run the cables through to. What do you need to wire Ethernet cable to a Ethernet socket and how do you do it! I know i can get wifi hooked up but I tried it once and didnt work and was expensive. I just went to best buy and bought a CAT6 premium network cable. I was told to plug it into my laptop and into the modem. Problem is, when I got home there was no extra space in the modem. Or in the back of the computer. There is one space for this size cable in the modem but its occupied by a cable that goes to the back of the computer. Im not sure where I should put the cable. please help thanks in advance

This one ethernet plug in my house doesnt work when i connect my 360 to it but these other 3 do?

We’re just now moving into the condo and as I’ve walked through I’ve noticed only 6 pin ports on all eight network wall plates. Is this normal? How do I take advantage of the Cat5 wiring if the ports only have 6 pin? Could the developer only find 6 pin plates, leaving two extra wires just hanging out in the wall? I mean, I understand that internet and phone don’t usually take up all 8 pins… but the interface just seems awkward.

Furthermore, how would I take advantage of such wiring, connecting a couple computers to the network, while avoiding IP conflict? What do other people use their Cat5 network for, if not this?

This is more of a followup of my last question. I did a speed test using dslreports.com using my desktop connected via a linksys usb wireless G and with cat5. I also did this test with one of my laptops. The speeds were all faster than the stated speeds for my plan. The wireless was actually rated faster than the wired. I am getting around 6Mbps which is what I get during downloads. The problem is that when transferring between computers on my lan speed is the same speed most of the time. I have done wifi laptop to wifi desktop, cat5 laptop to cat5 desktop, and any other combination. They all transferred at the same rate except for when I connected my laptop via cat5 and my desktop via wireless which was twice as fast.

I am thinking that my wireless router isn’t routing very quickly no matter how the computers are connected. My router is a Linksys WRT54G with DDWRT for firmware. Are other routers better at Lan throughput?

I have the blue CAT5 ports in all the bedrooms of the house. These CAT5 cables are all aggregated at the central electric box hub area but the have blunt ends. I was told, I could use these CAT5 ports if I connected them to a router which hooked up to the modem near the electric box. How do I connect these blunt ends of the blue CAT5 cables into the router? Would I need to buy the plastic sheathings and crimp all the colored wired together so they would fit into the router?
To Bob B, I don’t think the RJ 45 connectors were ever installed in the first place. The electrician had only installed the female part in the wall jack and left the other ends blunt and taped together near the electric hub

I recienty purchased a new vacuum. I have a DSL modem with a wireless Linksys broadband router. We have only the hard wire cat5e cable to our computers. We found the wireless connection unpredictable. So I plug the vacuum in and start it up and all connection to internet stops. When we turn the vacuum off 5-10 seconds later its working. I know now to vacuum when we don’t need to be online. But why is this happening?

I’m planning to hardwire my house, and trying to get an idea for it. I’m planning on buying a wireless/giga-bit router to connect to the modem, then buying long Cat6 cables (like 100 ft. long) to run under the house to connect multiple rooms. I’m wanting to hardwire for the extra speed because I move around lots of large files between systems, so I’m going for peak speed here.
My questions are:
1) Is there any such thing as a wireless-G router that has Giga-bit LAN? I only find that on Wireless-N routers.
2) Is Category 6 cables the right thing to get? I’ve read about Category 6e, but can’t really find long ones and not really sure if they improve speed.
3) Does the signal on a Cat6 cable degrade if its run for something like 100 ft.? Would I be forced to get a booster or something?
4) Are basic Cat6 cables safe to run under a pier and beam house, or do they typically degrade quickly?

i would like to know mainly if adsl+2 will interfere with my phone lines (land line) and if so, will i be able to get a second set of lines installed. i know mostly about the rest, thanks to google and Wikipedia.
p.s i would like any information that you can give me, no matter how trivial.
