Can I use my Vista parental controls to control my kids XP computer through my home network?

I have a westall 327 wireless dsl/router modem. My Vista PC is connected by cat5 to router, XP pc is connected via wireless. This is not as easy controlling my home network as XP was. I like Vista, so NO VISTA HATERS please.

Ideal Home Network (Hardware) Setup?

I am moving to a new house and I am planning to network all rooms. My plan at this point is to run Cat5e cables from every room to the garage, where I want to combine them in a patch rack. In the same vicinity, I want to place a router/switch to connect all rooms to a single modem. In addition, I would like to connect a dedicated server out there in the future.

Here are my questions:

- What is the CLEANEST way to accomplish the task. I am trying to avoid the “home-build” look and are planning on going for a (semi-)professional set-up.

- Once the cables come out of the wall, should I first feed them into their separate patch cabinet (in-wall? wall mounted?) or should I feed them straight into a small (wall mounted) server rack.

- What is the cleanest/safest/easiest way o run the cables through the wall/underneath the floor? Are racetracks the best way to go?

- Are there any good web tutorials?

- Where is the best place to purchase the equipment?

What kind of wireless router/switch setup is best for my home networking needs?

Hello Yahoo Community, it’s my first yahoo question!

Currently, we’re running a home network using a Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable Modem (we have Cox Cable Internet w/ powerboost – *advertised speed* = 15Mbps *actual speed* = 1-2 Mbps, on a good day). We’re running the network through a Netgear 54 Mbps WGR614 v6 wireless router. We have secured the network with a WPA generated passkey.

The problem: the laptops, desktops, iphones, and game systems are not able to connect wirelessly to the router at the same time without at least one getting kicked off the network or the network timing out. We have to do a manual modem reset (you know, unplug the power cord 10 sec, cross fingers, plug back in, etc.) at least once a day if not more often to get the device we want to connect at the time on the network properly.

We want to be able to connect the list of existing devices below but manage connections better so that the network isn’t completely hogged and folks aren’t kicked off the wireless network at home at random. The house is a two story house, but the range of the wifi signal does not seem to be the issue – someone will be surfing the net without any problems on a laptop upstairs in the furthest bedroom away from the router while someone else is trying to connect sitting a foot or two from the router itself downstairs and they can’t get on.

We would also like to create a home network that can not only connect the devices listed below more efficiently, but we want the option in the future to add in a networked printer that the computers can all print to centrally as well as add network-attached storage from two spare USB 2.0 hard drives to do backups on the computers in the house and possibly use as a central media hub/server to stream to the TV in the future.

My best guess for the reason for the problem boils down to three things: 1) The cable modem is a bit old and might be giving out randomly and we may need an upgrade, but I am not sure and/or 2) We need to upgrade our internet service to 25 Mbps and/or 3) The wireless router cannot handle the amount of devices connected to it.

I was thinking about upgrading us to an Airport Extreme Base Station or similar router but need to know if this will be able to handle the connections we need.

We’ve got the following devices connected:
1 Desktop PC running Windows XP connected via ethernet cable
2 Macbook Pros running Leopard and Snow Leopard connected wirelessly
1 iMac running Leopard connected wirelessly
2 iphones connected wirelessly (sometimes – mostly we have to default to 3G due to devices getting kicked off the network randomly and would prefer to use the wireless connection at home)
1 Tivo DVR connected via ethernet cable
1 Ps3 system connected via ethernet cable
1 Nintendo Wii connected wirelessly
1 Xbox 360 system connected wirelessly
1 VOIP Vonage router connected via ethernet cable

Any suggestions for routers or other setup ideas would be great. One restriction is that we can’t run CAT6 or other similar modification solutions as we rent our home. We need a non-destructive solution. I’m willing to run a few more ethernet cables along the floors with cable ties here and there but nothing involving drilling or running wires through a wall.

Any suggestions or advice for our set up would be greatly appreciated! :) Thank you for your time Yahoo Community!
Thanks for the advice TexasNetWolf! I tried the IPCONFIG command to get the ping test going with the router and it seems like the router is definitely the problem. The connection kept timing out as you said, but would work every once in a while.
The next question then would be if I have to get a new router, what kind would be best in terms of ease of set up for the list above – along with some room to grow to add the network attached storage, printer sharing and media server capabilities I mentioned above?

can I connect to the internet through a dial up modem on a ethernet home network?

Can two computers be set up to share a dial up internet connection? Both computers have ethernet cards, but on computer B the modem itself doesnt work (but the network card does). Is an ethernet switch necessary?

Connecting my D-link to a USTec prewire home network.?

I have just moved into a home that was prewired for a home network using Cat5e and a USTec home run center. All connections inculding phone, network and cable TV come to the UStec box. The bad part is the previous owner did not install the home network compoents in the UStec box. This should be easy enough. I thought I would put my own router and DSL modem in the box and just make the RJ45 connections on the cable, which I’ve done. The problem now seems to me that I can’t get a signal to the Modem. The phone section of the panel is configured with one inline and 8 pluges that are output lines; meaning that each one goes to phone in the house. When I pull the plug from an out port and plug my DSL modem I am expecting a signal just like I get when I plug into the phone wall outlet; what I get is nothing, no DSL signal. Am I don’t this correctly? if not please explain.

What do I need to look for when selecting a wireless router for a home network?

I recently purchased a used laptop with 802.11b wireless capability. I would like to set up a wireless home network with my desktop still connected via cable and a wireless router to connect my laptop. My house has three floors, with my desktop and internet connection in the basement. I will be using the laptop mostly on the main floor. I see routers with prices ranging from $25 to nearly $200. How do I select one that will be reliable without buying way more than I will need? Thanks for any advice or recommendations.

Home Networking Questions?

I have a wireless Router connected to a modem that I use to connect to the internet.

After moving to a new home, I have a realized that the wireless network is too far away form my other computers in the house, and I need to run ethernet wires to them.

I am not exactly sure what the optimal setup would be. I am trying to achieve the highest internet speeds possible. My computer has the LAN Chipset Marvell 88E8056 and a Max LAN Speed of 10/100/1000Mbps.

My best guess is to run a Category 5 e Patch cable from my router to the computer. The one I would buy is probably this one : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812601093.

Is this my best option, or is there something better for around the same price? Also, that wire is supposed rated at 550 mhz. What does this mean, and is it correct? I thought only cat6 ethernet wires went that high.

(Would buying a separate NIC be beneficial? I use my computer for gaming)

Comcast is my ISP. How would I determine what my internet connection upload/download speeds are rated?

(I have been told buying my own modem would be beneficial, as the Touchstone Telephony Modem [Arris Model TM602G/CT] limits my local internet Connection to 10 mbps. Is this true, even if my Upload/Download speeds are rated higher? If I bought my own, is it easy to setup, and would I notice a difference in internet speeds?)

Thanks for all the help,
NNJZ

Networking in an Ethernet-equipped home?

I bought a house that is fully ethernet-networked…so basically, each room has Cat5e sockets….when I trace these wires down to the basement, they are all connected to the “output” sections on a 40-port Switch…

So could this possible work:–

Connect my Cable Modem to the input coaxial cable in the basement…take the ethernet out (the line that would normally plug right into a single PC) and place that into the “input” on the SWITCH?

This way, will I be able to get internet in every room? What about multiple computers at the same time? Does the switch work like a Router too? Or will I need to place a separate router somewhere in this setup? What about a wireless access point?

I know these are a lot of questions, but any and all answers are welcome.

Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the input people…

Just a clarification:- a lot of you have suggested putting a router in between modem and switch…so do I just pick any one of the 4 “out” slots on the router and plug that into the “input” on the switch?

Who is the cheapest provider of Home Broadband?

I would like to get home broadband, but obviously would like it as cheap as possible. I would like a service that has no limits on downloading.

How can I add home network internet logon?

I am installing a “home network” in our fire station. I have a typical motorola modem with local cable internet, a D-Link 24 port switch, a buttload of CAT6 cable, and jacks/plates for each room. Now, how would I add internet logon so only the guys who paid for their internet could have access? (like at hotels that still charge for internet access). obviously we will all be chipping in $5 each month to pay for the access. Any other suggestions on network layout would be helpful. Thanks
Also, the guys will be using their own laptops/desktops so modification to personal computers is not an option (ie windows xp/vista logons)
Also… there will be 20 jacks.. so a standard linksys router with 4 ports isn’t an option either.. hence the purchase of a 24 port d-link switch.

Does my home network need an additional adapter?

I have a wireless router connected to my WinXP desktop PC via a CAT5 cable. One end inserted into the ethernet port, other end into the Line 1 port on the wireless router.

Also, I have a DSL modem. Another CAT5 cable inserted into the WAN port on the wireless router, other end into the Ethernet1 port on the DSL modem. I have an internet connection on my desktop PC.

I have a wireless PCMCIA adapter inserted into my WinME laptop so I can access the internet from my desktop, but it is not working. Do i need an ADDITIONAL wireless adapter in my PC to share the internet, or is my wireless router supposed to take the place of an adapter?

My DSL modem is a Westell D90, and my wireless router is a D-Link DI-524 802.11g, and the PCMCIA adapter in my laptop is a D-Link DWL-650 802.11b. I’ve been told both 802.11g and b are compatible.

Thank you in advance!

Is there any differances between the ADSL speed , 128KB and 512KB? and what is the best for home use?

Where can I find/configure my cwa in prewired new home?

I bought a home,in Texas, through a builder, Gordon Hartman, which came with cat5 installed. I didn’t ask for it, they threw it in for some other reason. I have my broadband ready and willing, but I can’t find the central area to hook up my modem, nor can I find literature on the option, since the company was purchased by another homebuilder, Mcmillin, who has disavowed any knowledge of and detached themselves from any responsibility for the company they purchased. Any ideas where the cwa may be located, or any way to find the information? I’d greatly appreciate it!

can i have 2 adsl plans on 1 home phone line?

if 1 phone line already has a adsl connection, say with telstra, can i move my exetel service to the same number and then have a modem connected for each service?

How can I use the CAT5 outlets in my home?

My family and I live in a new home that is wired for CAT5 throughout. Each bedroom has a jack with 2 coaxial outputs and 2 ethernet outlets. The living room has this as well. However, when I simply plug in an ethernet cable from the wall in my bedroom to my computer, it detects nothing. Our current network setup (through Comcast) is as follows:

In the living room, out of one of those aforementioned jacks, comes 1 ethernet cable and 2 coaxial cables (one goes to the modem, the other to our DVR, and the ethernet also goes from the modem for phone). Out of the modem comes a connection to our Linksys router, which then emits wireless signal (painfully slow) throughout the house. The router has 4 outlets in the back, in addition to the internet-in port.

After getting no signal from the first attempt I mentioned, I then hooked up an ethernet cable from one of the ports on the back of the router to the remaining empty ethernet port on the wall. When I came back to my room, still nothing. I’ve read around some sites that mention finding a “hub” of some sort? I can’t seem to find this anywhere in the house. What am I missing here? Any help would be awesome, thanks!
