There is only one spot on my modem for an ethernet cable and it’s already taken and running to the computer. I can’t get a splitter yet, as it’s sunday…but would it work for me to unplug the ethernet cable from my computer and plug it into my xbox 360 console. So it would be running directly from the console to the router?

First things first how do i find out if I have an ethernet card installed on my system.
now on to the question above connecting 2 computers via cable directly.
Can anyone give me a idiots guide how to do this. or point me in the right direction of somewhere that can especally with the ip address side of things.

Xbox is connected to my PC by an ethernet cable, and my pc is wirelessly connected to my router. Right now, my PC and Xbox don’t want to talk to each other, and my PC talks to my router fine. I am not able to change any options on the router. My current goal is to be able to share files from my computer to my Xbox. I’m not worried about Xbox live ast the moment.

I don’t have phone service just data for internet. so i want to use a better grade wire.

I am interested in a VOIP system that my computer doesnt have to be on all the time for. I would prefer like a system that gives me a perminant phone number.

So I have a PS3 but whenever I play online games I get disconnected unless I am hooked up directly through the modem. Whether it is a wired or wireless connection through the router it doesn’t matter, I always get disconnected. When connected to the modem there are no issues. I am using a Lynksis Wireless G router and all the proper ports are open. Any suggestions?

I have a Windows XP computer and a Windows NT4.0 Server. I got them both at a surplus sale (that is why the server is quite old). If it is possible, how can I make a direct network between the two? I have a CAT5 cable plugged into their TCP/IP ports, but I can’t get them to network.

I have four devices about 50 feet from my gigabit router that I want to connect. I am trying to figure out the best way to do it. Should I run four cat6 cables from my router the 50 feet to my devices or should I run one cat6 cable the 50 feet to a gigabit switch and from there plug in my four devices?

Would the gigabit switch be comparatively slower or will the speeds be the same based only on how many devices are hooked up to the router itself?
The perceived benefit of using a switch is that I would be able to hook up 4 more devices that I would normally be able to and I would only have to run one cat6 cable 50 feet, rather than four.

I bought a new desktop PC (eMachine ET1331G-03W from WalMart) with windows 7 installed, but I can not access internet by connecting to my existing wireless router(LinkSys BEFW11S4) with wired cable. Though all other existing desktops and laptops have no problem connecting to the same router. However, the new desktop PC works fine and able to connect to internet if I bypass the router and directly hook up with the cable modem.

At new PC when connecting to the router, I got the below information by typing ipconfig, the IP address looks wrong to me:

autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.71.140 subnet mask: 255.255.0.0 default gateway: (empty) NetBIOS over Tcpip: Enabled

Typing ipconfig at all other desktop and laptop have values like below, which are good to me:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.140
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

The wireless router was on 192.168.1.1, I do not know why the new desktop got 169.254.71.140 IP? It should have something like 192.168.1.xxx, and it was configured to automatically get IP by DHCP.

I have tried to switch cables,power off cable modem, router and reboot new pc many times and got no luck. So I believe this is only an issue related to router or new pc configuration.

Can someone help me figure out the issue?

Can you help me if you do, mine isn’t working.
