Is a CAT 5 cable any different than CAT 6?

What’s the deal with broadband and different OS’ ?

Why can windows systems connect to broadband so easily while other os’s like os x and linux need to contact customer service for a bunch of things. (or so I’ve heard)

Is it some sort of compatibility issues? It’s easy and automatic for XP and Vista. I tried a dual boot with Linux Mint and couldn’t connect to my dorm room connection. Most ISP’s CAN support all os’s though right?

Complex cat5 cables questions (3 different questions, all related)?

1.We are doing a temporary internet fix, and it is very complex to explain in writing, so I made a picture. Tell me if what is proposed is possible. I’m sorry is it is too confusing, I did the best I could. Feel free to email me with any questions. http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6940/internetplan.jpg

2. In the place where all our cat5 cables terminate, we have a LOT of cables. Is there a way to tell which cable leads where with minimal hassle, and preferably without trial-and-error? Cause there really are a lot of possible combinations.

3. Is it simple for a person with little electrical skill and no helper to set up two or three cat5 jacks?

I’m sorry for any inconvenience and the possible complexity of the first question. Once again, feel free to email me with any questions.

What is the different between router and modem?

We use router to separate the network, when a packet reach to router, the router check it routing table to decide where to forward the packet. The router is connected to modem, I curious what going on there between router and modem, can I connect to isp without modem? Why need modem? Just for the sake of signal translation? Does the modem tell router how to connect to the ISP? For example like giving router the ip address of the ISP?

I have my wireless router all set up with WPA2 security and MAC filtering. And it works fine unless I turn off my router, which led me to believe that it is being broadcast from MY router! Help!

My friends are considering buying a Vodafone Mobile Broadband USB Modem but each wants to use it at different times on their own machines. Is this possible without any hassle? They are low users of the internet so are only considering the 3GB model.
