Why does my Gigabit home network only transmit data between devices around 80Mbps?
I am running a Dell 8250, P4 2.4Ghz, 512MB RDRAM, WinXP, SATA RAID 1 300GB HDDs with a Netgear GA311 Gigabit adapter.
It is connected to a Netgear GS108 8 port Gigabit switch. Also connected to the switch is a Network Attached Storage Device (TeraStation 1.0TB) with a built-in gigabit adapter.
Both devices connect to the switch using 14′ Cat6 cables (brand new). All the network cards, switches are new, and the TeraStation is new. I can copy and paste data from the PC to the NAS, but it transmits around 80Mbps, which is short of the 1000Mbps advertised.
Also attached to the switch is a laptop with a 10/100 card and a DSL router running at 10/100. The switch shows the two gigabit devices connected at 1Gb and the two 100Mb devices connected at 100Mb.
Can someone help me understand if I am experiencing a hardware problem or perhaps I need to make some changes to my settings to get these two devices to transmit closer to 1GB.
The PC connects and transmits just fine to the device and over the internet. The problem is the speed. There is no firewall set up (the router takes care of that).
As far as overhead is concerned, can you give me something to look at, such as CPU % or available memory so can I use the performance meter under Admin in Control Panel to see if that is where the bottleneck is occuring…
I’ve switched cables, changed some settings, etc. but nothing seems to make much of a difference.
The connection to the switch is 1000Mbps according to the LEDs on the switch (for both devices). It accurately shows that the 10/100 devices are limited to 100, so I believe the cards and the switch are all compatible…

How do I connect to a PPPoE with devices that don’t have that option?
I want to use my bluray player, ipod touch, and printer on the internet but I am only offered a wireless PPPoE connection by my ISP. I know you can buy routers that connect to PPPoEs wirelessly but you first have to connect them to the internet physically by an ethernet cord. I do not have that option. I only can connect to the internet wirelessly through PPPoE.

There is no confusion on my part. There is a wireless connection that I am only allowed to connect through PPPoE. The devices I want to use are not able to connect through PPPoE but do have options to connect to the internet wirelessly.
