Can a normal phone cable be used for connecting a laptop to broadband?
I have a broadband point in my room (student accommodation) and a laptop that has a 56K modem. Would I get a faster connection if I used a wireless router to connect wirelessly to the broadband connection rather than just a standard phone cable (will a normal phone cable do?) connected between the point and my laptop? My laptop has Wi-Fi. Any advice would be much appreciated as I don’t really have clue. Thanks!!!

Connecting my D-link to a USTec prewire home network.?
I have just moved into a home that was prewired for a home network using Cat5e and a USTec home run center. All connections inculding phone, network and cable TV come to the UStec box. The bad part is the previous owner did not install the home network compoents in the UStec box. This should be easy enough. I thought I would put my own router and DSL modem in the box and just make the RJ45 connections on the cable, which I’ve done. The problem now seems to me that I can’t get a signal to the Modem. The phone section of the panel is configured with one inline and 8 pluges that are output lines; meaning that each one goes to phone in the house. When I pull the plug from an out port and plug my DSL modem I am expecting a signal just like I get when I plug into the phone wall outlet; what I get is nothing, no DSL signal. Am I don’t this correctly? if not please explain.

When I connect the two via crossover, the laptop-Vista will not recognize the desktop-XP. I cannot figure out how to get this to work so I would appreciate any step-by-step help.
Can connecting your computer to a wireless router via ethernet cable make the wireless signal less strong?
I just moved into a new apartment and my computer won’t pick up the wireless signal so I bought an ethernet cord to attach to the router. My roommates are complaining that since I have been connected via ethernet they have had a really bad wireless connection. Is this possible? I think it may just be a case of bad timing: their wireless crapping out at the same time I arrived.

Connecting my laptop via CAT5 from the PC’s wireless?
Okay, so we have a lot of PCs at home and one router.
My home’s set up:
Main pc has router and is plugged to the wall via ethernet (Cat5).
All others (2 desktop and 3 laptops) connect wireless.
One laptop recentlry has Ubuntu 10.10. This Ubuntu is capable of going online when plugged from the wall, however the wireless card in this laptop simply won’t work with Ubuntu.
What I am trying to do:
Use my desktop that has Windows 7 as a router. This Win7 PC has a wireless card and has internet, it also has an ethernet port. So I want to connect my laptop using CAT5 via my desktop.
I tried a few things but so far I still don’t get access.
Okay so I expect knowledgeable answers, if you post a link post it because it worked for you in a similar case, I already googled myself.
@LeonGrei… Is that what I was asking?
Thank you Jonny on the spot, right on the spot this time!. I read about the cross over cable, it says that its for transferring data between PCs, are you positive it’ll work to share an internet connection?

How do I setup multiple wireless routers and connect them to a CAT5e plug instead of connecting it to a modem?
I am getting to the point where I am going to setup a network in my new house. I plan on having a Qwest dsl modem/router to bring in the internet connection and then connect a 16-port D-link wired switch to allow more computers and devices to connect to the internet. There is about 2 cat5e and 1 cat 6 outlet(s) in each room of the house. I also have setup a place to put a wireless router/switch in the hallway of the main floor and basement. Both locations have a cat 5e cable running to them.
My question is how do I connect a wireless router/switch to the CAT5e plug in both hallways so that I don’t have to connect the routers to the dsl modem. Basically I want to turn two lines running from the D-link 16-port wired switch and use them in a way to create a wireless network in separate areas of the house. I have seen something similar at some of the local schools. They have a cat 5 outlet in a hallway and they just plug it into their wireless router that sits on the wall and it creates a wireless network. Is there anyway to bridge both wireless routers to share the same password? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the answer Adrian. I only have a couple of questions concerning the setup that you described on another post. Will it work without having a static ip address. I only have dynamic. Also how will this setup work if the 16 port switch is in between the second router and the dsl modem.
Connecting RJ45 JACK to Cat5e wire?
I’m trying to extend my cat5e Ethernet cable because I don’t have enough and it was really tough running it through the house.
But I have a rj45 jack
So I could use another nethernet cable to connect it to the existing one
But the cables don’t match up and I need to know how the colors cross
The rj45 has these colors
Green
Yellow
Brown
White
Blue
Orange
Black
Red
The cat5e Ethernet cable has
Green
Brown
White/green
White/orange
White/blue
Orange
Blue
I’ve done this before and it has worked but I lost my notes and I can’t figure the color matches now, cuss I know some are crossed
Should a crossover cable be used when connecting 2 cisco switches?
Or should a straight through be used?
