I want to connect two computers for data transfer using an Ethernet cable. Can I use any Ethernet cable without damaging my computers?

Or is there a special data transfer Ethernet cable I need to buy?

And do I need new drivers to conduct data transfer?

I connected my pc to the PS3 with an ethernet cable, and the pc is online with broadband.
For some reason I can not get it connected.
Already enabled sharing on all connections.
Can this be done without buying a router?

My friend has 1 computer in his house and 2 computers in his office in abuilding behind his house. The distance is too great for a wireless router to cover. He did run a single Cat5 between the 2 buildings and wants to have a wireless router in his house so his kids can use computers in the house wirelessly and hard wire the computer in his wife’s office. So, to hardwire the 2 computers in his office, could he use the Cat5 wire to connect a second router in his office to service the other 2 computers?

I have a desktop computer that does connect to the internet with the Broadband connection, but when i try to connect the broadband connection to MY laptop, it still doesn’t accept the network… Before, i could just connect the broadband to the laptop and get on the internet, but now it doesnt… I checked the options for Network and no idea what to do next…. I am confused. I have DSL on my phone line (the jack is very far away from my computer) and I was planning on connecting the dsl modem to the wireless router, and connecting wirelessly via my computer. But for some reason they are not communicating? Do I have to physically connect my computer to the router? If it helps my wireless router is a netgear WGT624 and my computer is a desktop. Arghh I hate AOL. How come they are unlike any other broadband ISP in terms of the internet being already connected. For AOL broadband silver I have to open up the software then click connect. So it’s basically like dial up but faster :/ it’s a nightmare though. I hate having to use their software, it lags my computer. Is there any way of not using the software? Nintendo has discontinued their wifi usb connector. i know that the wii doesn’t have an Ethernet connection. i have an adapter to go from usb to cat5. i connected this but it isn’t reading that there is a internet connection. what does the lan connector do to make it work? or is it my internet connection?

Whenever I try to connect, it says “The settings saved on this computer do not match the requirements needed to connect” or something similar to that.
Also, whenever I take the password off and leave it insecure, it connects just fine.
The only way I can connect is by using an Ethernet Cable from the router and my laptop.
