Looking for adapter/device that takes my cat5e cable and connects it to 3 devices? already running it to modem
For example..my cat5e cable is running through a modem and im looking to add it to another room to connect to pc and xbox 360. wireless modem not an option. also, i dont want to have to buy 2 50 foot cables just to connect the devices. I just want one 50 foot cable to connect to an adapter that will allow me to use 2 5 foot cat5e cables to connect to pc and xbox. Just looking for something like how telephone adapters split the phone like to make 2 jacks. Thanks.
How to wire a Cat5e cable with all solid colors?
I’m trying to run 2 cat5e cables into keystone jacks. I did the first one successfully with the diagrams I found on google, but when I go to strip the second cable the wire colors are different. The first one had the typical orange, blue, green, brown and a striped of each color, but the second has 8 different colors, no stripes. It has blue, light blue, green, light green, brown, tan, orange and white. I searched for answers for hours on how to wire with these colors, but found nothing. So I went and bought another cable and this cable is the exact same. Is there some kind of color conversion chart that I missed or a separate diagram? Thanks for any help.
I was using a cat5e cable for my computer and it has stopped working. Is it the cable or the outlet?
I’ve used this cat5e cable for the last…3 years and this week it stopped working. I hadn’t had my computer plugged into it because I hadn’t been around, so I didn’t know if that had something to do with it (though I highly doubt it).
I tried a new cable and that didn’t work either. I used a can of compressed air to make sure there was no dust or anything on the cable ends and both the port on the computer and the outlet in the wall. Nothing.
So I can only assume that it’s the outlet. The only thing is is that my mom has the same outlet on her side of the wall (we are in next door rooms) and hers is working just fine. My only other assumption is that it’s the computer port, but I don’t know how that could be. I unplugged it from my cable, and nothing was plugged in there since. Also, my wifi works just fine.
Does anyone have the solution to this, or know of anything that I can try? I’d like to have this taken care of tomorrow before my dad comes home.
Thanks!
Can i run internet cat5e cable next to a few power lines?
I am running some cat5e up to a new addition in my house and we didn’t think to run it before we put the drywall up. The only access point is through a ~1 inch hole through some boards that were originally drilled for power lines. I can squeeze the line through, but I am worried that it may cause interference with the signal. The wires are only going to touch for about 1-1.5 inches and seperate after. Am I ok, or should I just use wireless (which would be alot weaker of a signal than wired)?
Is there such thing as a cheap Cat5e wire?
I bought a 50ft cat5e wire off eBay for $10 and when I cut into it, none of the wires are twisted. Is this ok? is there such thing as a cheap cat5e cable? I will be using the internet for Xbox live and internet, I don’t play computer games.
besides the price, the wire I got eBay is not twisted at all, does this effect the connection speed? I have other cat5e wire the it’s twisted two wires together I got at best buy and staples
thanks the_benchman_nomore, I didn’t want to run all these wires into the walls to find out it didn’t work
Where can I find cat5e cabling that is not the standard 9 or 10 colors?
I’ve been tasked with finding some ‘different’ looking cat5e cabling. I work at a creative agency, and the powers-that-be have determined that the standard color cabling for the network is not acceptable for station drops. So, I’m trying to find something that is different than the norm, whether it is something striped, patterned, wrapped in blinking light (we have PoE switches, if that helps) to make it look like what people think fiber cable looks like…. I’m sure you get the point.
Thanks in advance for your help on a silly quest.
Yes, I mean the outer sheath. Not the actual wiring inside the cable. I’d like to avoid spray painting the cables – that’s way too much effort for me.
And “think fiber looks like” means flashing lights running back and forth through the cable. Basically a combination of christmas lights and a patch cable.
How to run CAT5e through my home attic to bedrooms?
I have a 4 bedroom house that I plan on running CAT5e to each room, wall jacks, keystones, etc. and having all the cable run to a centrally located 10/100/1000 switch. I would like my home to be seamlessly wired and I can’t think of any reason why I would need to have the switch sitting on the floor behind my desk or in any room visible. I’d like to be able to have the switch hidden completely.
So with that said, is it advisable to have all the cabling go through my attic to a central spot and have the switch mounted somewhere? I could tap in to power and install an outlet up there too. My largest concern is the fact that during the summer I have a handful of days that are 100 degree outside, which I would think would have the attic at 130+ degrees (F). I could see that creating trouble for the switch and possibly causing drops or other connectivity issues. Should I just place the switch on a wall in one of the closets and wire that closet for power?
Thanks for any help.
Home wiring – will I be ok only prewiring cat5e?
Looking for opinions. I’m buying a new house and need to make a decision regarding wiring. Phone pre-wiring is included so leave that out of the equation, but any additional wiring is out of pocket.
In an attempt to keep costs down I’m thinking of only wiring cat5e and not coaxial cable. There is FIOS tv in my area, so that will work with the cat5e. I’d get the benefit of having a nice ethernet backbone in my house, which I’d really like.
To me installing coax seems like a waste since it’s just for cable tv/internet, but I’m concerned about losing the choice between service providers. I plan to live in the house for many years so the cat5e also seems like the better long term solution.
Thoughts?
I don’t have the option of only wiring conduits…unfortunately. I also am not allowed to go in myself and do anything. Most likely I will use a wireless router for internet coverage, but I’m not going to use any wireless solution for tv, so I’m assuming I’m going to put out at least a few lines of something for TV.
Is 30m cat5e cable too short to notice speed loss with the internet + network comm’s?
I have a 30m cat5e cable going into my router downstairs, theres about 10 meters of unused wire just being looped by the router, but i dont want to cut it because it was the rj45′s already on as its a belkin pre made one… will i be noticing any loss of speed with the internet or network communications because of it being so long?
Connecting RJ45 JACK to Cat5e wire?
I’m trying to extend my cat5e Ethernet cable because I don’t have enough and it was really tough running it through the house.
But I have a rj45 jack
So I could use another nethernet cable to connect it to the existing one
But the cables don’t match up and I need to know how the colors cross
The rj45 has these colors
Green
Yellow
Brown
White
Blue
Orange
Black
Red
The cat5e Ethernet cable has
Green
Brown
White/green
White/orange
White/blue
Orange
Blue
I’ve done this before and it has worked but I lost my notes and I can’t figure the color matches now, cuss I know some are crossed
Cat 3 to Cat5e cable and/or adapter?
I can’t find one online or anywhere. Can someone help me find a site please? All help appreciated.
Home Networking with cat5e?
My local phone company hooked up my outide phone line on my brand new house. the two lines that come into the house are Cat5e and end in the attic. the whole house is run with cat5e only. I don’t plan on having phone service just internet so I thought this setup was great because connecting the rj45 jacks is a piece of cake. but the modem qwest provided is for dsl and only has a telephone recepticle as a line in. So how do I wire the phone jack to be best for the dsl modem?
They provided me with a data number and there isn’t cable in my area
The two lines coming out of the phone box have 4 twisted pairs and say Cat5e on the jacket. And they end in the attic where it is easy to get to.
Cat5e Questions in Oregon?
Hello. I am a computer tech in Oregon. I have my network+ certification but after solving a network issue (involved replacing an rj45 connector) I got a phone call from an electrician threatening to report me under ORS 479.620. I understand I cannot put cat5e wires in the wall but am I allowed to crimp new rj45 connectors on an old line?
The chart from the Google site I saw from doing research. “Computer” is very vague.
The wire was not in the wall it was taped to the wall by the owner of the building.
He found out because the owner said I fixed the network issue by adding a new connector. I had to pay him $500 to say he wrote off on it.
I was wondering is replacing a rj45 connector that’s incorrectly wired actually illegal… what good is network+ cert if I am not an electrician

Robert B: ORS479.620 looks to be exactly what i was looking for! Unless someone would like to add more.

500 Feet of cat5e for $17… scam?
ok i was looking for some cat5e wire and i found this website:
http://www.provantage.com/belkin-a7j304-500-wht~7BEL91QY.htm
Am i reading that right, 500 FEET of CAT5e cable for only $16.14, or am i completely missing something??
Well that justs busts my bubble…
its the wrong price, they said it should be in the 70$ range and if i was to order i would be contacted and would either get my money back or have to pay the difference
Wiring cat5e low voltage Panel and wall plates?
I ran Cat6 cable throughout a new construction house. In the low voltage panel I crimped Male Leviton RJ45 Cat5e Connectors, and for the wall plates I used the Leviton Quickport female punchdown Cat5e connectors. Both sides are wired using 568 B. I cannot get an internet connection..
I made some patch cables and can plug in directly from my router to computer and it works great. But when I try the patch cable from the wall plate it does not work, none of the wall plates work. I made a male/female cable using 568-B on the male end and -A on the female end it still did not work. I installed new female ends and it still does not work…
Any ideas?
Wiring Cat5e in home?
Okay so we recently moved into a new home and It has cat5e jacks in every room.
Yesterday the cable company setup our internet however, in the integrated home networking box he put the modem along with my router.
Now, instead of making the internet go to all the cat5e jacks it goes straight into my wireless router.
What I am trying to figure out is how do I undo his mess and make the internet to go all rooms? The box has a leviton voice and data board if that helps.
The house has 3 bedrooms, and two cat5e jacks to each.
Amerikal, I’m pretty sure they all go to the Leviton Home Integrated Networks hub in my closet.
will a CAT5e ethernet wire work on xbox 360?
can i use this wire to play online
Run another cat5e or use rj45 splitter?
I have a dlink router(model 624). Have a cat 5e cable going from the router to a spare computer in the basement, now I want to add another computer on the same cat5e for internet on both PCs. It is a short 50′ run. Question-which will give me a faster internet connection-an rj45 cable sharing/splitting kit or just running another cat5e from the back of the router to the basement so each PC has its own cat5e? Thank you.
How could I build a simple cat5e remote power switcher? Would this idea work?
Hello, I want to build something which I can use to turn a power switch off and on over ethernet/cat5e so I can reboot a remote device via it’s power plug which is plugged into a power socket connected to this custom device on one end of the cat5e cable with a switch or other crude device from the other end of the cat5e, there are ethernet signals alerady travelling down the cat5e cable.
I was thinking if I made a box which intercepts the cat5e at both ends, on the remote end it could perhaps listen on one of the unused cat5e pairs and at the other (control) end could send a signal down that pair when i pressed a button and when remote end gets the signal it could basically toggle a power switch (ie, switch off/on a power socket on/connected to the box), the pairs used for ethernet would obviousley need to be passed through.
Would this be possible and is this idea the best simple way to do it? I was wondering what kind of electronics I would need each side could it just be crude or would it involve transistors and complicated stuff like that?
I cannot afford the remote switches I have found like this one which is £329 GBP: http://www.leunig.de/_en/_pro/remote-power-switch/eps.htm
However if you know of a cheaper one please let me know.
Thanks Numbat but I ommited the fact that the Ethernet cable traverses a Ethernet over Powerline Homeplug syustem already, so I am guessing this would interfere with your soloution, which was interesting actually, but surely a simple signal system would work?
