Cat5 vs Cat5e? (10 points)?
Up to what speed does each support. Will it make a difference if you are using it for residential purpose. I am upgrading to a 16mbps connection. Will it make a difference. Thanks in advance.
Network Collision/ Not recognizing Cat5e?
I have a linksys 5port hub. We normally have 3-4 computers hooked up on it. Today I just got a new cat5, and when i plugged that into the hub, it is saying network collision (on the hub) and my computer says the lan is disconnected. it works fine when my cat5 is connected directly into the modem, but not when it is in the hub (even if it is the only one plugged in). Could anyone please help me determine how to fix this? Thanks!
Will cat5e do gigabit?
Or do you need to upgrade to cat6?
Cat5e Cat5e Ethernet Internet Cable?
Hey is there a product out there that will let me plug 1 into the other so i can make it longer like so i can plug a 100 foot into the other one
How do I setup multiple wireless routers and connect them to a CAT5e plug instead of connecting it to a modem?
I am getting to the point where I am going to setup a network in my new house. I plan on having a Qwest dsl modem/router to bring in the internet connection and then connect a 16-port D-link wired switch to allow more computers and devices to connect to the internet. There is about 2 cat5e and 1 cat 6 outlet(s) in each room of the house. I also have setup a place to put a wireless router/switch in the hallway of the main floor and basement. Both locations have a cat 5e cable running to them.
My question is how do I connect a wireless router/switch to the CAT5e plug in both hallways so that I don’t have to connect the routers to the dsl modem. Basically I want to turn two lines running from the D-link 16-port wired switch and use them in a way to create a wireless network in separate areas of the house. I have seen something similar at some of the local schools. They have a cat 5 outlet in a hallway and they just plug it into their wireless router that sits on the wall and it creates a wireless network. Is there anyway to bridge both wireless routers to share the same password? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the answer Adrian. I only have a couple of questions concerning the setup that you described on another post. Will it work without having a static ip address. I only have dynamic. Also how will this setup work if the 16 port switch is in between the second router and the dsl modem.
Thinking about using some fiberoptic cable instead of cat5e…?
I want to replace my wireless with a hardline, buried over 450 feet to reach my cabin. Hopefully, this will speed me up, and save headaches from my wireless conking out regularly.
I know I need to throw a switch in halfway to boost the voltage, no probs there. But lately, reading about lightning strikes has gotten me thinking about using fiberoptic to remove the potential of getting fried.
Now I thought I’d run just a couple feet of it, and use cat5e for the rest. This would break the metal connection to my PC and save me a whole pile of money.
Anyone know how much the thingies you need on the ends of the fiber cost, and also the fiber itself. I don’t know what I need exactly.
Does adding this extra complication cause much signal loss? I hear you want to minimize connectors in an ethernet cable. I figure any decent line has to be a lot faster than wireless, in any case.
Thanks!
Ja, but I hear those are mostly useless, and interfere with the signal. If it did fail, my $2000 PC be toast.
Is there any danger in snipping a live running ethernet cat5e wire?
I work at a business of about 100 people. I was just recently hired, but I am still in school and have only been at a tech school for 1 year after this semester. I have no idea if there is any danger in snipping a cat5e wire while it is still running. I could presume not, but I could be wrong. I have no help at work, as there is only one other person hired for IT but they are never here. I would unplug the wire at both ends, but I have no idea where this runs to. Again, just wondering if there is any danger in snipping a live(pluged in to router) cat5e wire. Thanks
I forgot to say where I was cutting it. I’m cutting it about 1 foot away from the current plug and then recapping and then trying to plug it back in after re-capping. Thanks.
someone mentioned Cat5e ethernet crossed cable. what excatly does the cross-cable mean or can do?
Is it different from the cable that connects to the switch? can the same cable work on PC-PC, and PC-SWITCH?
Thankyou.
What speed should a cat5e cable support at a distance of?
I have a dlink wireless n router, with a dlink pcie card at the moment. I am receiving my router signal from about 300ft from the house to the building i am in most of the time. I have comcast business class high speed internet, at about 60 megabits from a speedtest.net test, over lan near the router. How well do you think a cat5e Direct Burial & UV STP Shielded w/ Double Jacket Outdoor cable will work running from the router in the house, to the building I am in most of the time, with a 1 gigabit lan port on each end? decent speeds? perhaps satisfactory to at least 60 megabits for the internet? I do not transfer files between the computers on the network, I am only worried about covering the internet speed? what actual bandwidth results have people gotten with different cable types and distances? any help is appreciated greatly. Thank You ahead of time.
thank you all for the advice and help. i was getting the 60 megabits on wireless n with a dlink external antenna hooked to a matching dlink pcie wifi n adapter in the desktop, with the dlink wifi n router at the house, then all of a sudden it dropped to 20 megabits on the wireless end. there is only one higher router that dlink has, and it is the gaming router, and i do not think would benefit this situation as ive compared the distance specifications. the only other option at this point seems to be cat cabling. there is a fence going down the property, with no power hookups for repeaters. ive looked up about the use of a repeater, and i would if i could :S. i am on 2 1/2 acre property out of town, with very little problem of any interference if i used cat cabling as it would be underground as well as away from electronics for the majority of the run. yes 10ft patch cabling i think it said, at each end???? also the big bugaboo with wireless n, is that it is a similiar frequency as the
microwave, ~2.4ghz, and the microwave cuts the signal for the wifi out when i heat food up. which to me is very irritating, i eat at a bunch of times during the day and it drives me bonkers when i am in a video/audio call, and it drops out. even at times the connection drops out randomly for about a minute at a time, maybe once a day max.
Minimum temperature for a cat5e ethernet cable?
I just bought a cat5e ethernet cable and i want to connect it to my neighbors router. To do so i would have to run it outside about 25 feet untill its in their house. i live in maryland and its been no colder then 15 degrees at night. will this still work properly throughout the winter into the spring. btw its 200 feet so its plenty long enough
thanks for the specs. do you think there is anyway to cover it for that 25 feet to the other house? i was thinking something like that and then having it under ground
