Difference between CAT5 & CAT5e network cable?

Difference between CAT5 & CAT5e network cable?

How in the @#$! do you connect a Windows Vista computer to a Windows XP computer with a CAT5e cable?

I have looked everywhere, and the only directions I’m getting pertain to networks that only deal with IPv4 and not both IPv4 and IPv6 (which is in Vistas network properties). I may not have the limited connectivity problems that I have been having if I was connecting two XP computers (one of the many reasons why I HATE Vista!). I am an amateur at this, and the only reason why I am trying to connect the two computers is to easily exchange files and share drives between them. Any advice will help!

How do I create a lan between my two xp computers using only my standard cat5e cable?

I’m trying to create a lan between my two computers. I dont have a crossover cable and prefer not to go out to buy one. My laptop has the Nvidea Nforce networking card, and the desktop has an nvidea card, but all i remember of what it has (since its not where I am right now) is the capability to do a gigabit lan. all the suggestions i have encountered suggest using a crossover cable, which as i said, I’d rather not go get. (money is really tight right now.) A friend suggested that my networking card may automatically crossover the signal for me, but I have no way of knowing till i can update the information. What steps would i need to take in order to get the lan started and effective enough that data can be sent/recieved, particularly for gaming purposes?
And as another thought, I’m wanting steps on how to configure it people. I can connect them and get a message on both computers saying the network has an error. I’m trying to get steps so that way i wont get that message. When i do get that message, no data is being shared between the computers.
Only the laptop has a wireless networking card. This is why I mentioned the question specifically to using a standard cat5e (aka ethernet) cable.

help I’m trying to setup xbox live from wifi laptop to console via cat5e ethernet cable?

I have a ethernet cable from my wifi laptop to my xbox live console…it can’t seem to get the connection to the xbox but I have internet on my laptop. I’m running vista. My IP was set to automatic but now I’m guessing it needs to be static….but I don’t know what to use or same 1 as my laptop or netgear router?? When I put my mouse over the 2 pcs with the earth/internet it shows my netgear connection local and internet, and then the new 1 from the ethernet cable ..unidentified..as local only

How do you wire an ethernet wall jack using std cat5e?

I have a wall jack that I purchased from monoprice.com. I expected the wires to be labeled the same as the cat5 cable I have (green/orange/blue/brown solid and striped). Instead, the wiring on the wall jack is green, red, black, orange, brown, white, blue and yellow.

So, I guess I am wondering what colors go with what?

Here’s an image of the wall plate: http://images.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/10632.jpg.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Hmmm…can you no longer mark a question as “answered”?

First off, explains why I got these so cheap :) I thought I was beating the system. Still, I think my run should be less than 30m, so hopefully I’ll still get 100. Otherwise I wasted 80 cents :)

I followed the instructions here: http://www.la-cable.com/technical_support.htm and it seemed to work on a short test cable (and Windows reports running at 100). For reference I found this works:
OrangeStripe < --> Blue
OrangeSolid < --> Orange
GreenStripe < --> Black
BlueSolid < --> Red
BlueStripe < --> Green
GreenSolid < --> Yellow
BrownStripe < --> Brown
BrownSolid < --> White (or gray)

(AM I missing something with the “correct answer” choice? I thought that’s how Answers worked, but I don’t seem to see anything about it here…)

How to join ethernet cables (cat5e)?

Ok, the dog chewed my ethernet cable. I bought a sort of union that has a female jack for an RJ45. I have the RJ45 and know the sequence (white-orange, orange, white green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown… right?). The other thing in the box/union has a plastic structure where to clamp the wires, and a grid: ABAB, with different sequences. I guess if you follow A on the left, you follow the scheme for A on the right, and the same with B… but how do I know which one I need?
The scheme goes like this:

Imagine a grid of 4 rows and 4 columns. The grid has on its left 4 clampy things for 4 wires, and on its right 4 more. A is the first from the left and the colors are (top to bottom): br, wh-br, bl, wh-bl.
Column B is next with the same sequence.
Then column A again (I guess for the clampy things on the right) has the greens and the oranges, and column B has first oranges, then the greens (first the whites, then the solids).

Any ideas? I guess it’s got something to do with straight cable or crossed. I think mine is straight. Just trying to connect my modem with a bungalow outside.
Pls don’t give suggestions that involve other equipment, because I only want to use this union/box thing that was $8.

thanks!

I’ve run some Cat5e in my walls. I am getting 3mb download but almost no upload. What’s going on?

I know I’m getting some upload as I can send simple Google queries and get results. However, anything of any size at all is just not getting through. I’ve ruled out everything except the wire going through the wall. What could possibly be wrong with such that I get only a trinkle of upload speed?
Ok, so it’s obviously making the connection. Where else do I look?
I’m getting 3mb down and it can’t even run an upload test. Nothing.

I’ve tried hooking in directly to the router and that works just fine.

But when I go from the router to the wall (which goes through the attic to another wall) and then try to connect, I end up with these problems. I’ll try some of what you suggested, though.

Is it safe to bury cat5e cable?

I need to bury about 30ft. of ethernet cable between my two houses, but I’m not sure how safe it is. What are the risk factors involved? Lightning strikes, water damage to the cables, etc. Also, would running the cable through a garden hose or some plastic piping properly protect it from lightning and water damage? I don’t get many electrical storms in my area, but it still makes me nervous.
Would this be an adequate cable if I were to ground it? http://www.cat5ecableguy.com/inc/sdetail/14224
Would this be an adequate surge protector? http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-12-Outlet-Protector-Ethernet-Protection/dp/B000HPX46U

Thanks for all of the help so far!

Can you couple two cat5e cables?

I am running ethernet cables through an attic that is about 220 ft. long. These cables are to replace some cable that got broken whenever the techs who installed our new server rack and moved our switches through the wall. I have already run two of these cables and terminated them at either end and they work fine.

However I am a little bit short on cable for the final run and was wondering if there is an easy way to couple two of the broken cables together (before the actual breaks, which I verified by toning out all 8 wires). I don’t mind buying an RJ45 to RJ45 adapter if needed but I had a few at the house that I tried using and they didn’t work (I think the pull of the cable when being lifted up to zip ties that hold all of our cables pulled the connectors just enough that the pins weren’t making contact with the coupler). The electrician mention something about a coupler that you could use on the twisted pairs themselves.

Does anyone know of a good coupler that I can buy locally (don’t have time to wait for online) that will hold the cables very firmly or a way to couple the actual twisted pairs themselves (and then heatshrink for longevity)?
I do have all of the tools to do everything (crimpers, cable testers, etc.). This is a fast ethernet network. Never really thought about trying to terminate to a female. Perhaps with a keystone insert? I probably have an extra one.

How fast speeds do cat5e cables give?

I am planning on buying a belkin one that is 15m:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000121XZI/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Is it a good quality cable? I heard Belkin are a good brand so I hope it is…

My service provider Sky say up to 20mb wirelessly, can I expect similar speeds through the cable?

If not how fast can I expect, and are there better quality cables? Links would be appreciated.

can i run cat5e 1000+ feet?

we built a house 5 years ago for some reason the way they ran are phone line to the main phone line seems crazy its at least 800 to 1000 feet long and i know your not suppose to go more than 300 feet some how our internet still works and isnt really slow but when it comes to xbox live i start to notice it more i dont lag all the time but i also dont have a great connection and i can never be the host of a party so my main question is how can i improve this? what other types of wire or cable can i run besides firber optic cause i already priced that and its like 10 grand so please give me your import and feelings on this and why verizon would even run this with out suggesting fiber obtic or something else thanks
Can i put repeaters outside under ground?

I installed cat5e wiring using “Type B” RJ45 jacks and Leviton Quickport connectors T568B. It does not work

I installed cat5 wiring using RJ45 connectors at one end and Leviton Quickport Connectors at the other…

The RJ 45 plugs are wired using “Type B” wiring (Brown, Brown/White, Green, Blue/White, Blue, Green/White, Orange, Orange/White). The Quickports are wired using T568B wiring… None of them work.

Did I cross wires or should I use Type A on one end and type “B” on the other? I’ve doubled check the placement of the RJ45′s to make sure I did not hook them up backwords, it all seems good.

Any ideas?

Thanks to anybody who can help!!!

Would Cat5e Wall Jack work with a Cat5 cables?

Soon I will have a wired home network. Wireless would be easier, but I I am low on cash and want the full potential of my internet. I have pre-wired most of my home with a Cat 5 cables, I just need a router and ethernet wall jacks. So far I understand Bestbuy does not longer sell them ( I checked at the store) and was told RadioShack sells them ( I havent checked there yet). I found Cat 5e wall jack or port faceplate, on tigerdirect.com. (Why tigerdirect because its cheaper than it was at bestbuy, which is $4 more per wall jack. I dont know the price for them at radioshack.) I was wondering if anyone could tell me if Cat 5e wall jacks will work with Cat 5 cables. So there is no problem between the too. I just wanted to ask before I bought them, and find out it possibly doesnt work.

Thanks

Old cat5e cable affecting xbox live?

Ok, in the past few days, my connection has steadily fallen in strength. I was wondering if maybe this is due to the old Ethernet cable I have been using? I have had it for at least 5-9 years. It has been beat up also (twisted, tangled, stepped on, etc) I think this is what may be causing my connection to decrease but I am not sure. It could also be the new update for the 360 since it started around that time. I can’t see it being my router because we do have comcast and all other internet connections seem to be fine. Any help would be appreciated, Thank You.

cat5e crossover/satndard?

will a cat 5e crossover ethernet cable connect a modem to a laptop

or can i only use a standard cat 5e ethernet cable (non crossover)

they both say they connect 2 componants–

and the crossover is $2 cheaper
15 hours ago – 3 days left to answer.

its just confusing because the crossover package says the exact same thing as the standard

“conenct 2 components:hub, computer, modem…..”
thats what I figured–butt h epackaging made it look like you could connect 2 different componants…

http://www.diablocable.com has the best deal for fiber cables & cat5e cables. does radio shack sell these?

Multicolored 3′ CAT5e or CAT6 Patch Cable?

Best answer award will go to the person who gives me an online link to buy a multicolored patch cable. (Not a single color per cable, but multiple colors in one cable – like stripes, or different colored connectors, etc…)
