You’re reading the promotional literature of a competitor, and discover the statement “40 percent of our calls last less than 30 minutes”. You feel confident assuming an Exponential distribution for call durations.

Long story short, my house’s previous owners managed to nail the modem I have to a wall in my basement, in a closet at one corner of the house. In a few weeks, I’m going to get a desktop, which will go in the library on the first floor, in the other corner of the house. I have a wireless – N router, and even it isn’t powerful enough to get me a connection in that room, so getting a wifi card to put in my PCI slot would just be a waste of money. Wireless range extenders are something that i have tried, and they are unreliable. So, I need a cat5 cable running through the wall. I can’t have the cable running over the floor, because the house is relatively big, and having it run through the stairs, out of my basement door will just look ugly. First of all, who do I call to get the job done. Second, will he need to tear apart my walls to feed the cable through, or is there an easier way? Third, approximately how long will it take/how much will it cost?

Our company is about to upgrade to V7, from V4. We recently had a big problem and I realised how little I knew about it all. I need to learn about the architecture involved, how CM itself works regarding gateways, lists, hunts, all that shit, and the protocols that talk between to the voice routers.

I know this sounds kind of boring and all not having a PBX (down the road) but this is for simple home use. I have a Cisco 2621XM w/ Call Manager Express, a Voice Gateway 200 w a 2 VIC 2FX card, and a 7906G VOIP IP Phone. All I (boringly) want to do is plug in a phone line into the VG200, run it through the 2621 w/ Call Manager Express, and ring ring. Sounds simple, over complicated for a basic phone line but there is a bit more to it down the road. Is this relatively easy to do? Also, how is licensing handled? Always the fun buster… Thanks!
