To connect to the internet via ethernet cables, do I require a phone line?

I have a Virgin Media wireless hub where I can connect to the internet. This router works through fibre optic cables as we did not opt to have a phone line installed. So can I connect using an ethernet cable without having a phone line or will I be unable to?

Ethernet speed and cables questions?

Hello, I have a few questions about my ethernet speed and if I’m getting the 1000MB in my 10/100/1000 ethernet switch. My first question is if Cat5e and Enhanced Cat5 are the same? I have the Enhanced Cat5 cable connecting my modem to the switch, but the switch is only reading 100M (only one light is green). I have the Cat5e (doesn’t say enhanced on it) connecting my PC to my ethernet switch. This is where my main concern comes in. Both lights are on (1000M) for the port that my computer is connected to, but only the 100M is reading in the port my modem is connected to. So do I have wrong cables? Is the modem too old for 10/100/1000?

I hope this isn’t too confusing. Basically the port the modem connects to has just 100M lit up, but the port connecting my PC has both lit up.

I just did a test on Speedtest.net and its only reading 10-13 Mbps (mega-BITS not bytes). That doesn’t seem to fast…

Thanks,
Mike

Hello, is there any difference in quality between cheap and expensive ethernet cables?

I have a ps3 and i use a wireless router but i keep losing connection while playing modern warfare 2, so i want to get a 6 meter ethernet cable and connect it straight to the modem without using the router. I was wondering if there is any difference between cheap or expensive cables. Thanks.

Is there any problem if we put network cables & electrical wires together for office networking?

How to detect ethernet cables on punch down block?

We have a punch down block at my work. We have all these cables punched down to it, but the cables go into the ceiling, some of which were cut, and are just up in the ceiling going many yards into other areas through out our large building. The problem we have is, we cannot just pull these wires off the punch down block because we dont know which goes where. The people who worked this IS department before us messed everything up. Anyways, this punch down block that I’m talking about is used to telephones. The facilities people use cat5 for some reason. We would use a tone generator to put one end on one end of the line, and the tone generate where the “dead” lines are on the punch down, but like I said, all these wires are up in the ceiling and duct work from all the remodels through out the years. They didn’t take time to label anything, and re-install this same cable into the phone jacks on the walls, instead assuming it would just get newly reinstalled lines. Any good ideas?

Where can I find a load bar for RJ45 cables in the U.K.?

I saw this tutorial on wiring ethernet cables but the end I purchased for crimping did not come with “Loadbars”. When I searched for it in google nothing came up, are they called something else here in the U.K.

In case your wondering what a loadbar is then see the video in the below link (in the centre of the page).

Where are all those Internet and telephone cables?

Where are Internet and telephone cables carrying intercity telecommunication traffic located? Are they under highways, under roads, under railway lines, on electric poles?

And besides, has every ISP its own parallel nationwide network, or does it just lease the already installed Internet cables owned and by another company? Wouldn’t it too expensive for a new company to lay down its own cables across the country when they are already there? Thanks.

Would wiring all wires on a Cat5 cables to my phone line increase speed?

Hey there Y!Answers, i have a question thats really been bothering me about my ADSL speeds,
i have AT&T Elite (pointless IMO), and it claims “6mbps”, kinda low, i know. but my speeds cap out at 680kbps even though a speed tests claims i have 6.4mbps down.
so would wiring new Cat5e cables along the side of my house into the wall jack (i only have one that branches off into 2 other ones… i live in a really old house).
the cable thats connected outside my house is from around the 90′s or early 2000′s, (Not Cat5) but i recently had my phone line fixed and they halfway wired the outside with cat5e.
so would using cat5e cables THROUGHOUT the whole house and cat 6 on my routers really improve my speeds?
and if so how would i go about wiring the cables at the service box? (i noticed currently only 2 wires from inside the cables are being used… why just 2?) and i have my Linksys Wireless N/Gigabit router connected to my current AT&T router/modem and it seems pointless since its running off a phone line cable with only 2 wires being used (ironically the brand is 2wire),
so all together i was wondering if using cat5e wiring throughout would help increase my speeds, how would i go along wiring my Linksys router directly to the phone line rather than through the modem which makes it pointless, and how would i go along connecting it to the back of the house in the service box? (I installed new phone jacks and they all have cat5 connections but the 6feet of wiring leading into the house is really old wiring)
thanks in advance, as always i will choose a best answer.

networking cables help!!!!!!!?

does a cat6 cable work in a cat5e extender(an extender attaches to ethernet cables to be a big cable, lie this one http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812993024) and does a male connector work in female, i am not sure if this is male or female ethernet cable:http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189093, but i want to connect it to this extender:http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812993024

Broadband Home network: Can I use ethernet cables & jack or do I have to have a router?

The main computer is connected to broadband with one RJ45 10/100/1000. The network adapters on it are: 802.11n wireless LAN card, Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.
The other computer is older and as far as I can tell it has an Intel 82562 ET 100 Base-TX PHY jack. The network adapter on it is: Intel (R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection.
I want to connect the main computer with broadband to this older computer which is going to be located apprx. 120 feet away in a metal sided building.
Can I use ethernet CAT6 cables and an ethernet jack to accomplish this?
I do not think wireless will work with the metal sided building.

How to join ethernet cables (cat5e)?

Ok, the dog chewed my ethernet cable. I bought a sort of union that has a female jack for an RJ45. I have the RJ45 and know the sequence (white-orange, orange, white green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown… right?). The other thing in the box/union has a plastic structure where to clamp the wires, and a grid: ABAB, with different sequences. I guess if you follow A on the left, you follow the scheme for A on the right, and the same with B… but how do I know which one I need?
The scheme goes like this:

Imagine a grid of 4 rows and 4 columns. The grid has on its left 4 clampy things for 4 wires, and on its right 4 more. A is the first from the left and the colors are (top to bottom): br, wh-br, bl, wh-bl.
Column B is next with the same sequence.
Then column A again (I guess for the clampy things on the right) has the greens and the oranges, and column B has first oranges, then the greens (first the whites, then the solids).

Any ideas? I guess it’s got something to do with straight cable or crossed. I think mine is straight. Just trying to connect my modem with a bungalow outside.
Pls don’t give suggestions that involve other equipment, because I only want to use this union/box thing that was $8.

thanks!

Can you couple two cat5e cables?

I am running ethernet cables through an attic that is about 220 ft. long. These cables are to replace some cable that got broken whenever the techs who installed our new server rack and moved our switches through the wall. I have already run two of these cables and terminated them at either end and they work fine.

However I am a little bit short on cable for the final run and was wondering if there is an easy way to couple two of the broken cables together (before the actual breaks, which I verified by toning out all 8 wires). I don’t mind buying an RJ45 to RJ45 adapter if needed but I had a few at the house that I tried using and they didn’t work (I think the pull of the cable when being lifted up to zip ties that hold all of our cables pulled the connectors just enough that the pins weren’t making contact with the coupler). The electrician mention something about a coupler that you could use on the twisted pairs themselves.

Does anyone know of a good coupler that I can buy locally (don’t have time to wait for online) that will hold the cables very firmly or a way to couple the actual twisted pairs themselves (and then heatshrink for longevity)?
I do have all of the tools to do everything (crimpers, cable testers, etc.). This is a fast ethernet network. Never really thought about trying to terminate to a female. Perhaps with a keystone insert? I probably have an extra one.
