The placement of the wireless router will not be within direct wiring distance and I want to avoid changing out my existing wired router setup.

My current router is an Linksys – G WKPC54G and I haven’t purchased a wireless router yet.

I have a broadband point in my room (student accommodation) and a laptop that has a 56K modem. Would I get a faster connection if I used a wireless router to connect wirelessly to the broadband connection rather than just a standard phone cable (will a normal phone cable do?) connected between the point and my laptop? My laptop has Wi-Fi. Any advice would be much appreciated as I don’t really have clue. Thanks!!!

I’m just wondering the basics of LAN. All I’ve got is 1 CAT5 cable and two computers… Is there anything else that is essential to me?

I want to connect 2 PCs so i can play Warcraft 3 DOTA with my brother. How do i manage it? Do i need an ethernet cable? We both are using Windows 7 and dont have a internet connection (i sent my modem to get fixed).

So can i connect 2 PCs with an ethernet cable? Can i manage it without internet? Please give me the full procedure on how to do this.

Will this type of cable work with my Belkin Wireless G-Plus router? I mean, if I connect my PC directly to the router using this ethernet cable, I and everyone else connected to the router will be able to connect to the internet with no problems? I need to ask this because upon searching for cables I discovered there are different types like “crossover” and such.

Other recommendations are welcome also.

I’m trying to connect my laptop and a desktop my uncle gave me so I can use the desktop as primary storage for both of the computers. I don’t really care if the desktop gets internet access, but right now I can’t get the two computers to “talk” to each other at all. I have them connected to each other via ethernet cable… now what?

Im trying to connect my 360 to xbox live and since XBOX is all automated now, nothing is helping. My x box is connected to my laptop through a Cat5e Network Cable. My laptop is connected to my linksys router (with optimum online connection) wirelessly. I created a bridge between my local area connection and wireless network.

in the past, to cascade switches you had to connect from the “cascade” port and have a button pushed, but now I need to connect my 4 port router to a switch to add more ports, do I use a patch cat5 or a crossover cat5?

I have a 2wire dsl modem/router with 4 ethernet jacks and 1 usb port and im wondering what is better to use to connect to the internet/download stuff? I know its possible to use USB to connect, you just need a driver, but is it better or slower than the standard ethernet cable (cat5)??

I tried going over coax with a modulator, that did not work. I could go over 3 Coax with RCA tips on them but I would rather not use that. I thought there was a system that could go over CAT5 cable but I have not found it yet.
The longest cable I have found is 12′ I would not like to use that many connectors.
There are wireless solutions as well, but I would like to use somethig more reliable.

I have a difficult setup with my LAN. The cable I received with my high speed internet connection has forced me to run the data cable across an entryway. I’ve tried ordering a longer Ethernet cable so I can run the cable over the doorway, and thus avoid laying it across the entryway. But twice I’ve gotten the wrong kind of cable, because I didn’t understand the difference between these patch cables.

What I have now, and its wrong (too thick) is a PC Ethernet Cable CAT5E. I got down on the floor to read my original cable serial numbers. Well there are a couple dozen identifying numbers. But I think that the main identifying information is Cat 5 Patch Cable UTP. All I see are CAT5E Patch Cables on Overstock. And what I think I need is Cat 5 Cable UTP.

Is there anyone in the community that can give me a link to where they sell Cat 5 Cables UTP, or any other information that can help me make the correct choice this time? I have a Siemens Speed Stream 4100 router, if that’s any help.

I have a PS3 and the Ethernet cable, and I have no idea what to do to hook it up online.
I also have a router, and I have the ethernet cable in the LAN port on both the PS3 and the router.
The router isn’t lighting up, but I can’t hook it up to the modem because it’s upstairs and hooked up to the computer and phone, while the PS3 is downstairs.

How do I make this work?
