Web2.0 Expo (Part 4): Using HTML5 Web Sockets to Create Real-time Applications

Harnessing the Power of HTML5 Web Sockets to Create Scalable Real-time Applications Web2.0 Expo SF 2010 Peter Lubbers, Brian Albers Kaazing 3:10pm Thursday, 05/06/2010 For More Info, Including PDF Slides, visit: www.web2expo.com Today, we enjoy what looks like a real-time web experience, but take a look under the hood and you’ll quickly see that this “real-time” experience has an outrageously high price tag—one you pay with network throughput and latency. The user-perceived real-time experience is often achieved by using an assortment of clever browser hacks and obscure techniques known as Comet or Reverse Ajax. The bottom line is that simulating bi-directional browser communication over HTTP—which is half-duplex and request/response driven by nature—is error-prone and complex. Complexity does not scale. HTML5 Web Sockets to the rescue! Defined in the Communications section of the HTML5 specification, HTML5 Web Sockets represent the next evolution of web communications—a full-duplex, bidirectional communications channel that operates over a single socket. WebSockets provide not only a standard against which scalable real-time RIA applications can be built, but also a socket, native to the browser, that facilitates network programming from the browser with super-efficient bi-directional (full-duplex) communication over a single connection, eliminating many the problems that Comet and AJAX solutions are prone to and getting rid of the complexity. In this session, Brian and

Will using a Gigabit Switch be slower than using Multiple Cat6 Cables Directly from the Router?

I have four devices about 50 feet from my gigabit router that I want to connect. I am trying to figure out the best way to do it. Should I run four cat6 cables from my router the 50 feet to my devices or should I run one cat6 cable the 50 feet to a gigabit switch and from there plug in my four devices?

Would the gigabit switch be comparatively slower or will the speeds be the same based only on how many devices are hooked up to the router itself?
The perceived benefit of using a switch is that I would be able to hook up 4 more devices that I would normally be able to and I would only have to run one cat6 cable 50 feet, rather than four.

Setting up Netgear Wireless Router…PPPoE, requires login to access internet. I don’t know what to do. Help?

After the cd setup for my Netgear router, I’m sent to routerlogin.com (or http://192.168.###.### i don’t know the numbers)

The Settings Wizard detected that I have a PPPoE connection. Then I’m asked for a Login and Password. It also has “Service Name (if required)”

I don’t know what to put in there. I tried mikelaguna@sbcglobal.net [the email i made when i first joined at&t] and mikelaguna. I left the service name field blank. This didn’t work. Then I tried login: mikelaguna and the service name: sbcglobal.net That didn’t work either. service name: sbcglobal or att or at&t. none worked.

I called at&t tech support to see if i had forgotten about another ISP password. the guy hadn’t a clue about any password, username, login, anything. Can anyone tell me what to do?

p.s. i’ve already set the SSID and WEP key in another page. It’s just that login thing that prevents me from getting a conneciton.

The router is connected via ethernet cable to the desktop i’m using right now. I want to start the wireless connection to get internet on my laptop.

Is this possible at all?

I have laptop which has bluetooth and wifi. It also has a dial up modem which connects through RJ11 jack. I have nokia N82 cell phone which also has both bluetooth and wifi.
I was wondering if I could connect my mobile phone to my laptop via bluetooth or wifi so that I could make calls using my PSTN phone.
Is this possible, if yes.. how?
If its not, I just gave developers a new idea ;p.
