What is the pinout for an RJ11 phone line using Cat5 cable?

We’ve got a new house with Cat5 cable. I need to terminate one to my DSL modem but I can’t seem to get the pin configuration correct for the RJ11 going into the DSL modem.

Why just not use the regular phone jack

Cat-5 cable uses RJ-45 connectors. This link shows how the color codes work:

Here’s another link that may help you:

I have a little hardware experience, so I’ll answer what i think your asking. With a cat5 you have to reverse the cables inside. blue on the left and brown on the right on one side and on the other side brown then blue. I could be completely off from what you asked, sorry.

If you are refering to the rj11 cable bringing the phone line into your DSL modem. Simply use a normal RJ 11 cable and plug it into the wall. Do the same on the other end. RJ11 cables fit into the standard RJ45 jacks. The phone line uses the middle pair which is the same for either 568a or 568b terminations of cat5. RJ11 is a small 4 conductor jack. RJ45 is the cat5 8 conductor jack.

If you are trying to patch into the Ethernet side of your DSL modem. Just use a standard Cat5 patch cord. If you have an older DSL modem there is chance you will need a crossover cat5 cable to plug into its ethernet port.
