How can I tell if I need a Cat5 or Cat9 or some other type of wire?

How can I tell if I need a Cat5 or Cat9 or some other type of wire to go from my router to a computer upstairs that will not reliably find the wireless signal? (I have satelite internet, but that doesn’t really make a difference, right?) I also have the N-type router.

If you have an Ethernet port on your modem, Cat5 cable will work fine. It is pretty much the standard, supports 100Mbps transfer. Your internet type makes no difference.

Cat5 is perfectly adequate for 100mbps communications. Cat6 will do it too but costs a little more. The very small incremental change between the two for a home network is not worth the extra cost.

use 5e or 6 in case u ever want to upgrade to gigabit connectivity in the future. If you only want to connect to the internet than 5 will be fine.
